Beer-monster Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 Seen very few throws in Wado (except tani otoshi in one of the oyos) but maybe at the higher grades I'll notices m ore JJ elements. But at the moment Wado seems to use some of the principles of JJ to make karate softer, so I don't really see it as a blend as claimed. Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.
telsun Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 I've started something here haven't I I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
Beer-monster Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 Maybe. Buts its still just a polite discussion for the moment so no big deal. When it starts getting ugly, I'll stop it. Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.
telsun Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 Yes I am enjoying the discussion. I didn't mean it was getting out off hand, just turning into a bit of a debate. I am not sure of the style of JJ I am doing (Yoshin-ryu/Kano JJ, I'll find out)but it is like attending a karate class. Well a little. We always train with partners. They don't seem to practice kicking and stuff, in the air. But we do defences against kicking, punching, etc. Plus the usual throws and groundwork. Some of the stuff we do is similar to what we have done at karate, I think that is why I believe I can slip things in. I don't know if most JJ clubs train this way but the others I have seen around this area have been like a Judo class as someone mentioned earlier. I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
Beer-monster Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 Seems like the way we train, I do Shorinjikan JJ Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.
sansoouser Posted July 4, 2003 Posted July 4, 2003 i thought it was judo vs karate not karate vs jujitsu. Did you change it along the lines somewhere? Anyway here it is plain and simple Karate = Striking Judo = Throwing and wrestling pins The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
telsun Posted July 4, 2003 Posted July 4, 2003 Yes sansoouser. Thats what I meant when I wrote:I've started something here haven't I Jujitsu was just a suggestion to combine the two arts instead of choosing between the two I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
major_motoko Posted July 4, 2003 Posted July 4, 2003 Yep somewhere along the way we got talking about JJ, but it's all good discussion Tho it won't help LoneWolf as he said he's only got Karate and Judo clubs near him I am genuinley interested in what JJ folks think about Wado cos it's all facinating to me. I guess when it boils down to it, Wado is karate through and through. just a few nice little JJ things thrown in along the way to make it distinct from other styles such as shotokan etc. Hopefully I'll be going to a JJ day course next month so I might actually know a little bit more about what I'm trying to talk about thanks! motoko 2nd Kyu Brown Belt, Wado Ryu Karate-do"Daniel-san best karate still inside!" Shotokan_Fighter Posted July 5, 2003 Posted July 5, 2003 id much rather prefer karate4 over judo in particular, shotokan karate. to me karate is a overall better fighting art. but if a person gets you on the ground well then your SOL. "When I fight, I fight with my heart, and soul. My heart, and soul is Shotokan Karate."Shotokan_fighters creed"karate has to come natural in a fight, if you have to think about using karate in a fight, you will loose the fight"3rd kyu brown belt - shotokan karate
Kamidake Posted July 5, 2003 Posted July 5, 2003 As to the question of whether I'd rather take the karateka or the judoka into a dark alley: I'd leave them both behind and take a 12-gauge with me.
