lilbigman Posted June 25, 2003 Posted June 25, 2003 Hello I'm new here and I have a question you guys have probably answered hundreds of times but here it goes. I am trying to develope more speed and accurracy in my kicks, but my instructor seems to be more concerned with power more than anything. I have good power behind my kicks but what's the point if they are not going to strike where intended, or if they are just going to be countered. I need your advice and tips on accuracy and speed. Please help a newbie out. I never get into a situation that I cant get out of.
granmasterchen Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 well your instructor should know that you first develope your skill, then speed and finally power, because, as you said, you can have all the power in the world but if you can't connect and are too slow it doesn't do you any good unless you get lucky..... something that i like to do , and this may sound silly but give it a try.... take a little grocery bag....throw it in the air and start kicking it with different kicks, do not let it fall to the ground... this will let you work multiple kicks, accuracey, and speed, you will notice that you will be kicking the bag all over the place, and this will also build endurance b/c you will have to continue kicking over and over, fun little activity try it! That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger

G95champ Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 Speed will come as you get stronger and better techinque. The 3 are all related. Power is a result of speed and good techinque. Techinque has to be done slow and eaisy until you can get it right. To develope quick muscles however things like jumping rope, dot drills, box jumps will help. (General George S. Please help a newbie out. No offense to your sensei,but he seems like a fucking idiot,sounds like you know more then him. Get a new instructor is my first suggestion.A real instructor knows that training for power is not the most important thing,because with speed comes true power. You are correct in wanting speed and accuracy.Like you said what's the point of power if you have no speed or accuracy and your instructor should know that too.To me it sounds like you should be teaching him instead of him teaching you. To develope speed hit or kick the heavy bag as much as you can and as quickly as you can then as you advance try and kick even quicker,start off slow and work your way up.Take track of how many kicks you get up to each day. Also do lots of skipping,start off slow and as you get better skip faster and faster. Running around a track can help you not only get stronger legs but help you get quicker. For leg speed I'd say kicking the heavy bag is best,because you get quicker,tougher legs, better accuracy and keep fit all at same time. Once you got the speed you will have the power. Just remember:With speed comes power. Kicks are not the only thing for speed that is important,you should work towards being quick with your hands as well.
Warp Spider Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Well, it's easy for you to all denounce the guy's sensei, but the converse of what you guys are saying is also true. What good is all the accuracy in the world if the guy you hit just laughs at you. Maybe your sensei thinks that you are already very fast and it's just a self-image thing. Or something. I'd say try sparring against some people to see if your lack of accuracy/speed is all in your head, or if your power is not as good as you may have believed. Valithor Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 Hi Lilbigman, To develop better accuracy with your kicks, you need more control. To get more control you need flexibility and balanced strength. It is important to develop all the muscle groups involved in kicking. Whilst some may give you greater power, others can assist you with control. Some training suggestions: * Practise your kicks (in air) in slow-mo and then super-slow-mo, maintaining good technique and control. (At various heights) * Use fixed targets to practice on (from fast to super-slow-mo) * Use moving targets to practice on I like the plastic bag suggestion above. Previously I've used a balloon. Once you've developed greater accuracy, you'll want to keep it. Mark targets on a punching bag or perhaps use a variety of makiwara boards at various heights. Hope you find a method that suits you! MuayThai Fighter Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 Another good idea for accuracy is to practice on Bobb,the human looking bag. You can practice your shots on face and body,so you know exactly where you are hitting or kicking.
