G95champ
Its just the catch word. Eveyone calls any type of tighting that one kicks - karate. IMO this is what gives a lot of traditional arts a bad name because a lot of non karate schools call themselves karate and don't know better. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
major_motoko
I also find a lot of non-MA-practitioners don't even know the difference between Kung Fu and Karate!! My old relatives are always asking me "how's your kung fu thing going?" It make me laugh, but I'm patient with them But a lot of people think "it's all the same thing" and Karate and Kung Fu are the only names they have heard of usually, thanks to films and tv! motoko 2nd Kyu Brown Belt, Wado Ryu Karate-do"Daniel-san best karate still inside!" SandanPJ
The KARATE Kid.... A movie which spawned some interest during the 80's.....Maybe if it had been the Kenpo Kid or Kung Fu Kid we would see otherwise....That was half serious.... As said before, Karate is a generic term now.
Kirves
Karate is a generic term now. In your country. Don't forget that minor detail. Here only some grandmoms may resort to that kind of generalization (and if they do, then it's all judo, not karate - even the famous "karate chop" is a "judo chop" around the grannies here). BudoKaiMéxico
Hi! A lot of people don´t understand the difference between a MA & other, then in USA too many dojos announce "KARATE", but in Europe, Asia or Latin America we give each Art his name. I think is only a Marketing thing in your country (is USA, isn´t?) Ilich miguel Torres Fong 2nd Dan BB Shito Kai Central America & Caribbean Confederation (WKF - PKF Zone) Kumite Judge Monterrey, México Im open to learn & talk about any MA or Style (all are great)
Kirves
Yeah, in Europe, at least earlier, mysticism sells, if you put up a new "karate school" everyone just passes it by thinking "oh, another one of those". But if you put up a KickinSquirrel Moo Sool Dojang everyone's thinking "wow, I haven't heard of that, I must go in and see what it is!". I have gotten the idea that in the US it is the other way round. If someone wants to open up a new school, he'd better use a familiar name like "karate" or everyone's coming in ordering Chinese. bustr
What amuses me are these guys who train in boxing, wrestling etc. for 20 years, get a black belt in karate then open a school teaching all of their tactics and labelling it "karate" when karate makes up only 20-30% of their total training. battousai16
"he'd better use a familiar name like "karate" or everyone's coming in ordering Chinese. " yeah, that's about right.
