G Money Slick Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I will redily admit that most Aikido styles are weak against a boxer's quickly recoiling strikes. But there are ways that Aikido throws and by extension some judo and jujitsu technniques can be easily applied using Aiki principles. The key to neutralizing trained fighters is to quickly access the fact that they have skill and then adjust your game plan to accomodate that fact. Unfortunnately most 'pure aikido" styles don't have these tricks in their bag. I would suggest an aikijujitsu style before a more traditional aikido style based on that fact alone. But that's just my two yen. Yes that would be quite an interesting match up. Two completely opposite philosophies on fighting. I don't really know much about Aikido other than what I've seen in Steven Seagal flicks but an Aikido/Boxing fight would be pretty cool to watch. If your enemy refuses to be humbled......you must destroy him.

Drunken_Apprentice Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I always thought aikido needed more "fast" blocking to deal with some of the strikes that don't have the full committment of weight. I second G's thoughts ... I'd love to see two practitioners of equal skill spar for a few rounds.
Mart Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I really like the point made earlier by Guy_who_fights. That Aikido is really useful PRE-FIGHT. I can see that you can get a great mental edge on your wouldbe attacker if you caqn throw them across the ground when they are trying to push you which is how almost al fights i have seen have started. I had already been considering Aikido but i think i will really go and start some training. Seize the day!
White Warlock Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 As i mentioned in a few past posts, aikido is far more effective than most people give it credit for. I wouldn't necessarily call it a 'pre-fight' system, as i would call it an 'alternative to fighting' system. Aikido gives you the 'option' not to use deadly force. I have taken people down that were running, thinking of attacking, were attacking others, and also that were attacking me. It is applicable, but i will agree that, without the mental ammo to end the confrontation without resorting to more extreme acts of violence, it's merely a practice in futility. If your intent is to maim or kill someone, then starting out with aikido is ridiculous. On the other hand, if you can see that the confrontation can be resolved without having to resort to mutilation or murder, then verbal communication and systems like aikido are definitely options that could be available to you... if you had spent the time to study them in the first place. And, as always.... it's not the style, but the person who uses a style and his ability to gauge the degree of violence necessary to neutralize the threat. Mart Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Good points Warlock. I think that it would be possible to use Aikido, at least from what i have seen, to subdue the AVERAGE drunk that picks a fight, at least in the UK it would be. That would be good becuase the last thing you need is all his mates joining in. I think that Aikido could be very useful. I do MT as well and would us this this if all else fails but by that point my mentallity is that uts a fight to the death unless i knock them out. It would be great to have a system like this as well. Seize the day!
White Warlock Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I actually crack up when i see some hard-style martial artist pestering an aikidoist to fight. The aikidoist just stands there and asks, "why?" The hard-style martial artist gets all frustrated and eventually walks away saying to their friends that aikidoists are all a bunch of fairies and they wouldn't be able to fight their way out of a paper bag. The reason i crack up? The aikidoist won the fight. "When you are able to take the keys from my hand, you will be ready to drive." - Shaolin DMV TestIntro
Mart Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 it depends on if they get drawn in to the hard style fighters game or not. Seize the day!
White Warlock Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 No, not at all Mart. If they don't fight... they followed the path of peace. Sometimes it's better just to cause someone to question their own motives than it is to prove them wrong. Mart Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 In all honesty i wouldnt swap my MT for Aikido but i will add it. I see your point but i wouldnt rate Aikido over MT in a straight fight but in the avoidance and prefight part or dealing with drunks etc its great. Seize the day!
