TKD and wushu both provide a great way to stay in shape and meet friends.

Self Defense: Training at either kind of school will probably get you punched in the jaw in a real life situation, but that's just the stereotypical tae kwon do school. Any kind of wushu school will get you punched in the jaw.

Physical Fitness: both are Perfect for staying in shape.

Flashy Looks: bothare great here too.

Belt ranking: Fluctuates by school. If I remember correctly, the traditional TKD ranking is White Yellow Green Blue Red Black.

Emphasis: Pretty stuff for wushu. It's all demonstrational. Tae Kwon Do will stereotypically be just pretty high kicks.

Having personal experience in both arts, let me tell you this.

If you are looking for self defense...

DO NOT TAKE THEM!

My old wushu school taught only forms. It did not even teach individual moves... However if you are looking for acrobatics wushu is the way to go. My old TKD school taught exclusively kicks, which I find ridiculously stupid.

Don't take TKD for self defense? Why not? I already know how to throw a punch pretty well, as the past has shown. But I have nothing, I mean NOTHING else in the area. The other things that I could choose in the area I cannot afford.

Is there a boxing gym around?

I say take Tae Kwon Do, and get a heavy bag at home. The fastest and one of the hardest punchers I know is a tae kwon do practitioner.

You just need to train hard with punches outside of class and use the speed and flexibility of your legs to develop lightening fast practical kicks.
