Icetuete Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 heyya - so what exactly is wushu? are there any emphasises put in wushu like kicking in TKD or something? is it good for self defense? what is the belt system like? any of u studying wushu? dont have any idea about it...
paolung Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 wushu means 'war art' in chinese, and was originally used to describe the vast expanse of martial arts in china. these days, wushu has turned into a sort of national sport of sorts... the emphasis is on speed, fluidity, and for lack of a better word, "flair" (this conjures up images of the movie "office space" but i think it fits). i.e., how good you look doing it. generally, "wushu" is not practiced or trained today with actual combat in mind, but rather the above elements with perhaps some competition. hope this answers your questions. "It is not how much you know but how well you have mastered what you've learnt. When making an assessment of one's martial arts training one should measure the depth rather than the length". - MASTER "General" D. Lacey
Icetuete Posted June 24, 2003 Author Posted June 24, 2003 yeah kind of... but is there perhaps anything else interesting to know about? due to the fact that it is a "non-combat martial art" (wierd...) its probably not what i was looking for...
aznkarateboi Posted June 24, 2003 Posted June 24, 2003 MODERN WUSHU SUCKS!! That is, if you are looking for self defense. Trust me, I have taken it and I have several friends who take it and it is purely for show! Purely!
Icetuete Posted June 24, 2003 Author Posted June 24, 2003 that indeed is certainly NOT what i am looking for in an martial art...!!
ahgao Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 Wushu is the general terms for all form of Chinese Martial Arts. Contemp wushu is a sport wushu that focus on performance. Although a performing martial art, every move excersie a form of attach or defense, but whether it is practical is another issue. Traditional wushu various from thousands of family, style and teaching. Hsing-I, Pak Kua, Taichi is the 3 main well known internal art of wushu. All 3 arts are useful in combat situation. Other internal arts include, Shaoling "Xin Yi Ba", Muslim "Xin Yi Liu He Quan", "Liu He Ba Fa", "Yi Quan"... etc. Hung Gar, Wing Chun, Choy Gar, Jow Gar, Law Gar, Har Gar and many more are southern wushu. Focus on soild lower stance and power bridge hand. Good for close combat. Tong Bei, Fang Zi, Hua Quan, Cha Quan, Song Jiang Quan, Shaolin Quan and many more are northern wushu. Focus on fast pace footwork and long fist attack. Good for long range fighting. Whether a wushu is practical or not can't be tell unless the instructor or sifu teach you the practical aspect of the art you are learning. Take TKD (not flaming), if the coach only teach you how to block, kick, chop and punch without emphysing the ways to excecute the moves, there are simply no practical value of the art. A street fighter without knowledge of martial arts but is eager to hurt you, will excersie his mental ability to hurt you. Bite ears, kick groin, thrown sands into eyes, grab your "balls"... this is practicality. Daniel KawSgWutan.com - Singapore Pugilistic Community Infotainment Site
monkeygirl Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 Modern wushu is very flashy, all about katas. I've never heard of sparring in modern wushu. Some arts are completely combat-oriented...mod. wushu is completely artistic! 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
Icetuete Posted June 26, 2003 Author Posted June 26, 2003 man - this chinese stuff sure is complicated. so many styles ... thanks to everyone that answered!! i came to the conclusion that i dont like wushu
focus102 Posted June 29, 2003 Posted June 29, 2003 You can't discredit all of wushu simply because modern wushu practitioners are mainly acrobatic. Traditional wushu practitioners definitely spar and have all the self defense abilities of other styles (if not more). Nevertheless their main focus is not combat; they regard their art as a way of life. "Nothing is impossible to the willing mind."
Icetuete Posted June 29, 2003 Author Posted June 29, 2003 its not that anyone discredits wushu or something. it just isnt what i was looking for. THAT is not my way of life and i am not even sure whether my other style shall become a way of life instead of a hobby. its just too acrobatic and stuff and i am not sure inhowfar the wushu school in my area is traditional or not. and an noob like me wont find out by a visit or two.
