It's about directing your Ki as you execute a move. In Zazen meditation they say to breath from your hara, which is described as being two inches from the naval and it the spiritual and physical centre of the body. I hope that's right, as I said I'm only just starting to read up on this, as it isn't really taught in my dojo A "silent" Kiai is almost as effective as a loud one when it comes to Ki, though it might not sound quite so impressive motoko 2nd Kyu Brown Belt, Wado Ryu Karate-do"Daniel-san best karate still inside!" telsun Posted July 4, 2003 Posted July 4, 2003 I'm surprised nobody has mentioned proper breathing technique yet. From the belly...not the shoulders. Anyone care to expand on this? Grandmasterchen? KSN Doug?Correct tanden breathing would not encourage him to breath. Although I suppose that if he was concentarating on breathing through the tanden then it just might. However as has already been said the strong exhalation on the technique would be enough to execute correct breathing. Try taking some deep breaths before starting your kata and as you have said yourself try not to concentrate so hard on it that you do it anyway!!! Do you practice Sanchin or Tensho in your style? I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
battousai16 Posted July 4, 2003 Author Posted July 4, 2003 "Do you practice Sanchin or Tensho in your style?" eh? whuzzat? "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
telsun Posted July 5, 2003 Posted July 5, 2003 From your reply I would guess that you do not. Sanchin and Tensho are 2 kata's practiced in various styles of karate. They empthasise your breathing and would help you regulate how you breath during practice. If you are not familiar with these kata it maybe worth looking into yoga or tai chi. Although I do not think that they use the same martial focus during their practice. It was just a thought. I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
battousai16 Posted July 5, 2003 Author Posted July 5, 2003 well, i think it was just a matter of my losing focus. i went to a new school and they've had me teach a few classes there, and i was worried so much about how i looked (i'm so vain ) that i lost concentration on what i was doing, because this school is a little more of a perfectionist-ic school than my old one was. someone said that after 10 years maybe i was trying to live up to expectations set by someone or other, and i think s/he was right. i just need to practice, practice, practice! gah, i'm turing into my music teacher!
