UsagiYojimbo Posted June 22, 2003 Posted June 22, 2003 Hi there. I'm a first-time poster with a question. I'm looking to take up a martial art again, and I'm wondering if anyone has info. on schools in Columbus, Ohio. Years ago I started taking Goju Ryu karate, and was involved with that for a year and a half. So far, the best fit for me seems to be this school: https://www.karateheart.com. I have briefly taken wushu and been somewhat more involved with tai chi; I'm open to a more internal style, but I prefer something that's also physically demanding. Anyone know of any other good schools I should check out here? Keep in mind, my budget is $50/month. Thanks, Usagi

Martial_Artist Posted June 22, 2003 Posted June 22, 2003 Hi, You've got a good question, unfortunately I don't live out that way and don't know of any schools in that area. The advice I have to offer is: pick the school that accomplishes what you what you want to attain from study. If something particularly catches your interest, i.e. self-defense, then pick a school that promotes self-defense and do some research into that style. You can ask questions about the style here, if you like. There are many informed people on this forum. I'm sure you would information to help you form your decision. Then, talk to the instructor. If you feel good about the instructor, then that's a good thing. Also, watch a few of the classes. See how things go. Compare visits to several schools and go with what you like. MA. Pacificshore Posted June 22, 2003 Posted June 22, 2003 Hi, I took a look at the website you posted and it's very reasonable if your on a budget or not . How much internal work they do is another question. Perhaps since they offer Tai Chi that's their way of offering the internal training of MA, therefore combining the hard/soft aspect of training. Have you looked perhaps into some Kung-fu systems? Or are any offered in your area? Many internal systems may just be as physically demanding as say a hard style system of karate. Well just my thoughts on the subject. Good luck on your search . Di'DaDeeeee!!!Mind of Mencia
UsagiYojimbo Posted June 22, 2003 Author Posted June 22, 2003 Thanks for the advice. As far as kung fu in my area goes, there are 2 main schools I was considering. However, they're both taught by the same guy, and I visited one of his classes and didn't like what I saw; not that it was bad, necessarily, just not what I was looking for. I also participated in a wushu club briefly, but it was too loosely structured and I didn't really feel like I was learning much. Anyway, I'll keep looking and try this place out. Thanks. Faith (Usagi)
granmasterchen Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 there is a nice school taught by Tom Smith over on the eastern part of ohio, in coulumbiana county, he holds 2 tournies a year and they are state and national level so if you get a chance you may want to swing by any state tournie and see if you run into him, he would be able to help you at least, if you are unable to reach that area or are not interested in the style he can point you in the right direction, he knows all the instructors in the state, plus is a member of the black belt hall of fame, nice guy, he can help you out, if you see him tell him that tim in japan sent you That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
UsagiYojimbo Posted June 23, 2003 Author Posted June 23, 2003 Thanks for the tip, Granmaster. I don't get out that way much, but if I end up at a tourney there, I'll be sure to look him up.
granmasterchen Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 he usually tries to hit all the big tournies in ohio, with a few of his students, i know he is in columbus quite a bit, so you maybe able to catch him sometime, good luck That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
karatekid1975 Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 I found a few school in your area with websites. A few don't have sites, but here are the ones that do http://www.webspawner.com/users/fourwindsmartiala/index.html http://www.bright.net/~ju-jutsu/ (Jujistu) http://www.being-in-movement.com/ (Aikido) http://www.1freespirit.com/afskamain.htm (TKD) http://www.bushido.us/niwadojo (Goju Ryu) There are a lot of schools in your area. I would look through the phone book under karate or martial arts. I hope this helps. Laurie F
