sansoouser
What are some effective self defense martial arts? These next comments are just what i've heard so no offense meant and I am not speaking from experience just readings. That some styles of Kung Fu use to flashy techniques and are useless in a fight. That karate uses to much kata and not enough emphasis on self defense. Taekwondo uses to much old style techniques like learning high kicks that were once used to dismount riders. JUdo is not street effective because it has very few if any that are tought striking techniques. Judo is effective because of the hard throws. And some more so again these are just opinions not facts, you can make anything work so take no offense. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
Blade
Any art can be if you train well enough. I'm in TKD and while there are quite a few high kicks, i would more than likely think about and use belt level kicks to defend myself on the street. Save the high kicks for sparring in tournaments. kajukenbo dad
Kajukenbo is good on the street and has Five Styles...Good Luck Practice is the best of all instructors...
capn_midnight
If you do a search on these boards, you will certainly find tons of posts that have already covered this very topic. That way, you don't have to wait for other people to reply to your post. Arguing with an engineer is like mud wrestling a pig. After a few hours, you realize they both like it. Drunken Monkey
i always thought tkd was just a korean re-interpretation of karate that general choi hung hei organised and taught to the korean army. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite." Karateka_latino
If you are interest in a just self defense system, then its useless for you to look into the more traditional styles since it takes time to make them work. Look for styles like Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do, etc....
crouton
i'd have to agree with SubmissionFighter. some traditional martial arts, though good, takes years to become effective in a self defense situation. if you just want an effective (street) self defense system, check out Vee Arnis Jitsu. Treebranch
My Mexican Judo is the best. Judo know if I have a gun and Judo know if I have a knife.
