i saw a post earlier that said karate wont work well if you are attacked from behind...what could i say to this....YEA IT WILL!

and anyways, how are karateka's of all people going to say that just because BJJ fighters have defeated shotokan a few times that there is NO shotokan ka that can take the heat. even boxers know that style dominance changes all the time. i personnaly, as an isshinryu student, am not impressed by Brazilian Ju-Jitsu. i would love to enter a match with a practitoner of the style and allow them the chance to 'impress me'. i dont sweat a coup,e of cute little lacey tiitles. shotokan practioners, you should sweat them either. im telling you, if you will ignore the hype there making and just train hard and do your best youll find these guys arnt gods, take them down and place Master Funakushi's name once again among the greatest founders of the world.

I've been in Isshin ryu for 15 years, I still enjoy it.

I also believe that a pure isshin ryu stylist would get taken down and beaten either by submission or ground and pound.

It's not just been a couple karate vs BJJ, its been the vast majority of them. There have been many, but only a few video taped and uploaded to the net.

Fireka, 99% of the time a pure karateka will get taken down and get get a limb broken or get choken unconcious by a BJJ fighter. Thats just how it is yet everyone thinks they are the exception.

Thats just how it is...It's nice you show so much enthusiasm about fighting one..however im pretty certain if you ever did your opinions would change.

Dont pretend like You ever practice takedown defenses or clinch work..since you dont do that you definetly better be readyto do well from your back with punches comming down(something im sure you train for in great deal)

Have you ever heard of the gracie Challenge? Anywhere.. anytime. I suggest you find the nearest one and test your skills.

Sprawl?

No one who does karate, would in their right mind use traditional blocks. The movements I use are a combo of tight cover and fast parries (more WC that karate).

Kicks are only chambered high, low kicks just snap out (except stomps).

Kata aren't a do as guide. They show the core movements of techniques but things such as stances and blocks are not what they seem.

But anyway you are right. It would take alot of modification for a karateka to take on an experienced grappler.

However the shoot is the signature takedown in these tournaments (and the one karateka usually fall for) so I just wanted to know if a karateka would last much l;onger if we could defend the sprawl (perhaps with out taking it to the mat?)

Sorry fireka they're right.

However Don't stop trying. Perhaps there is a way to beat BJJ using karate (hasn't been found yet but doesn't mean its not there), hwoever iut will take a lot of blood, sweat, tears, pain and training to find it.

so, the gracies call themselves martial artist, yet there so cocky they belive them selves to be invincible? thats just fine, so am i! :) I do not doubt there have been many victories in the past, and i do not doubt that BJJ is a good art that has amny advantages. However, style really dosent matter in the end does it? all forms of martial arts are merely diffrent roads to the same destiniation. allow me then, to meet the gracie brothers at our destenation and defeat them, both at once, if that is what it takes. Beer-monster hit the nail on the head. blood sweat and tears, you'll get nothing less from me. But i dont think i have to be the one to do it. sure, if you all would like me to, just rember my name, i can make history for you. But what i am claiming is that even a shotokan practioner can beat them. The one thing martial arts has shown me is that no task is immposible, this is my philosophy about all things. not to mention, lets look at simple trends. there was a time when wu-shu and kung-fu were considered elite invincible arts. will, that died off with enter the dragon, so now BJJ gets its 15 minutes of fame. enjoy it. because it will soon be karate's turn. If there is a problem, ladies and gentelman, with our style against grapplers, than i suggest we stop moping, get off our lazy hides and fix it. A wing chun artist once told me that i should try looking at the core of the style and not as much the technique, the techniques are important, but if you look at the theroy, and apply it to the situation, a formula can be devised to defeat anything.........SO WHAT ARE YA LOOKING AT LETS GO! :P

It will happened one day fire ka, calm down. The martial arts philosophy proves it, but lets not all get big head and say we're invinsible.

Where did TJS get the 99% of the time was it from watching every single fight in the world? added them up and calculated the %? I agree that in the ring a bjj may dominate if you have no groung experiance but it a bar if bjj walks up and wants to fight ill put my hands up and say no then step back, if he steps foreward then he cant see, he cant breath and he cant walk. I do not square up to people and fight, I do it only for self defense.

im not claiming to be invincible, the gracie brothers are. And nothing ever happens without people who say, its time to go. forgive me, again i am a hipocrit for claiming to be a budo ka, but patince is a sorry virtue. i like courage alot more. All i am saying is, is that fine, karate has a natural problem dealing with grapplers. thats okay, we have a lot of good things other people dont. but now that we have regonized a problem, instead of mopeing about how some little grand master's brats can mop the floor with us, we need to look at the theroy behind our styles and see what we can add, adjust, or remove, to fix the problem .
