Sho-ju Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 I didn't see any posts saying it didn't work. What I did see were posts saying it wasn't effective in the cage. I have been doing karate for 15 years and jiu jitsu for 9 and admitt that karate isn't all it's cracked up to be, but nothing is. Shotokan was designed for a different purpose, that's all. I do firmly believe that you have to alter Shotokan kumite only a little to have a much more effective style. That is why in my dojo we train with kyokushin rules and thai rules once a week.
shotokanwarrior Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 I bleieve that when two people are locked in the cage like in ufc both parties are expecting to fight and are ready for it, but this is not what karate is about. If a thug grabs your arm on the street he has no clue as to what you are going to do to him and bam , Karate does work. Where Art ends, nature begins.

So Karate relys on your opponet not expecting you to fight back? karate only works if you suprise someone?
fireka Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 this is foolish. until someone here goes up and fights your not going to know either way. I say you shotokan fighters show up or shut up. i mean that respectfully to, i think shotokan style deserves the same respect as all the other styles. one of you needs to prove the jokers calling all your schools 'mcdojo's' wrong by competeing and winning. shotokanwarrior Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 I am saying the average karate guy can use self defense on the street but he or she is not conditioned for the sport of the ufc unless they train for it. I am talking about a mugging or a carjacking or something to that effect where the perp thinks of you as a target. When a person has challenged my sensi in the dojo he will tell them that everyone will leave and the doors will be locked, no one to witness it and no refs. They will always back down. Where Art ends, nature begins.
fireka Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 the idea that the martial arts can not, and should not, be adapted for both defense as well as sport is not only ridiculus, but futial. its to late for such a fight. every year the popularity of competetions grow, competetive fighters are rising to the elite among the noticed sports stars, more power to them. i have heard over and over to the point of vomiting about how traditional styles should not be used for sport. i love being traditional, but i also understand that the martial arts are still growing. an excellent example of this is the creation of the nunchuku, a 20th century weapon despite contrary beliefe. the nunchuku would be about as familiar to a ninja as a labtop. But the fact is the concept of the nunchucku is traditional and effective weapon when used properly. dont be narrow minded (speaking to no one in paticular) the martial arts were create to be adapted to the needs of the user, weather that was individual protection or use in an army setting. well, now we have shown the need for karate as a sport. yes, a need. i also dont belive this is a completely new concept. All stlyes now should be learning this new method of using there art, including shotokan. (geez, my sensai would kill me if he saw this post!) I agree that karate of any sort on the street is a relatively good form of self defence. The problem with karate (and all stiking arts) is that everyone knows how to kick or punch (even if they only know it at a basic level), so a grappler will be able to kick and punch a karate guy until he gets him to the ground, then the grappler can really go all out on the karate guy and the karate guy is without a hope (because without training in grappling, its not the sort of thing that you can just naturally do). Even though I study karate, I think a grappling art is important to complement a striking art, even though a grappler can usually cope well enough without learning a striking art. My karate instructor always makes us think that the moment you hit the ground, you'll basically have lost the fight as a karate student with no grappling background (unless you get lucky), so we try to learn to get our kicks and punches hard and fast, to try and keep our distance from out opponent and hopefully stay standing for the duration of the fight. Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
Shotokan_Fighter Posted June 23, 2003 Author Posted June 23, 2003 fire ka you think the same way i do there needs to be more like us and shotokan warrior to we all stand beside our art trough thick and thin dosent matter but im with fire ka all the way shotokan needs more respect than it gets one day ppl will know how good shotokan really is im not saying it is the best MA out there but to me it is i eat sleep and breath shotokan karate. shotokan karate is my life. and that is what seperates me from alot of ppl these days who study shotokan "When I fight, I fight with my heart, and soul. My heart, and soul is Shotokan Karate."Shotokan_fighters creed"karate has to come natural in a fight, if you have to think about using karate in a fight, you will loose the fight"3rd kyu brown belt - shotokan karate
