broomhilda000 Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 How often does someone have to defend themselves? I am a black belt in judo so it's a little late to decide to start or not. But I am wonder if I should start a striking art, ( although my sensie teaches black belts the true judo striking techniques ) like TWD or kung fu or oryu karate. But I am wondering if it is worth starting a new martial art all over again. My judo seems to have " stopped " any attack that has come to me ( a quick throw or armbar usually stops them ) so thanks for your answers. Be as a tranquil pool of water in the woods. Calm, collected, reflecting on its surface all that is around it. Make your own mind such a quiet mirror reflecting the mind of the opponent. Even as your partner's impulse to attack passes through his mind it should be reflected in you.The safest battle is the one that is never fought
TJS Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 It's never to late to start...i belive a striking art would go well with judo I would recomend boxing or Muay Thai.
Blade Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 It depends on what crime is like where you live. If you're afraid of getting mugged, then a striking art could come in handy along with your judo skills.
Kirves Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 It is good to have some training in striking arts so you are better able to defend against strikes too. Try one of these: 1. Muay Thai or Kickboxing 2. Full contact karate style 3. Savate 4. Sanda They are all good striking arts and complements well with Judo skills.
Martial_Artist Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Well, it's better to have the tool and never use it rather than really need the tool and not have it. It never hurts to expand your knowledge or library of weaponry. "I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination.Imagination is more important than knowledge.Knowledge is limited. granmasterchen Posted June 22, 2003 Posted June 22, 2003 I agree with all the posters, you never know when you will need that training, and it never hurts to know it, also you are never to old to start.Believe me, when you start combining different styles,it only helps you in the long run, your arsenal will be that much greater, plus you will be able to see more of the big picture of fighting and be able to work yourself more on certain areas, grappling and striking are great things to have, i encourage you to learn as much as possible That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
Jade_Lotus Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 I would have to agree. You never know when you'll need it. And as stated, it's better to be prepared and never have to use it, than to need it, and not have it to use. You should never limit yourself. Anything that helps you to defend yourself, learn it. boxeador Posted June 24, 2003 Posted June 24, 2003 Do you need to learn a new style? No. Will it help? Yes. Getting into a striking art will definitely help you in a self-defense situation. You are never too old to learn an art, although it is more advantageous to learn while you are young. In my opinion I think you should go and start a striking art.
