Hi,

does anyone know the name of the Japanese drumming with the HUGE drums? Often you see the drummer sitting down in front of the drum which is sitting vertically (not horizontal like usual drums) and they hit it with sticks which look bigger than normal drumsticks. I think this drumming is also done in Korea and other Asian countries. I really want to find out more about it but I can't remember what it's called.

Thanks! :)

The drums are called Taiko drums, and Ernie Reyes' demo team uses them in their demonstrations. From what I remember of one of their demonstrations, I thought they were hitting the drums with escrima sticks.

http://www.taiko.com/ For more info.

Hope that helps! :)

I went to a wedding that featured the Oto-wa Taiko drummers. Quite the experience. :D

We had the school master's daughter and another girl learning the Korean ones back at my first dojang. They were using three, one in front and one on each side.

They were so cute whipping around in circles.

I have seen these twice in North-West England, a powerful experience that you have to experience to understand. I have a CD of their music in the car but it doesnt do it justice.

major_motoko: I would recommend going to see them play next time they are in your area :)

Thanks for the link Renketsu! :)

The annoying thing is, I think a few months ago that group were playing at the theatre just up the road from where I work. But I just never got around to booking the tickets, and by the time I thought about it they had gone :(

Next time I see them advertised I will definetly book tickets! The little I've seen of Taiko on television, the drumming really took my breath away! I will try to look for a CD, but as you say, I'm sure it won't do it justice!

anyone hitting a taiko drum with an escrima stick is a pretty lousy percussionist. there are sticks made especially for them, which can easily be supplimented with clavés. anything to much longer, and you'll get to much leverage and damage the drum head.

We has a group at my high school who performed a dance w/ those drums, they are really cool when they get the right beat to it!

Well, they never said what the sticks were, I just thought they looked like escrima sticks. Whether that's what they were or not, I can't be sure. :)
