Alrighty then. I have practiced/do practice two MAs. Seido Karate and Muay Thai. The first time I really learnt about grappling was in Muay Thai. We use the word "grappling" in reference to when you get your opponent into a grapple in order to knee them. ie: One hand on the back of their head high enough so you can pull it down to your chest, the other securing the grapple by holding your wrist and your elbows locked together on their chest.

I have also heard this referred to as "clinching".

I just went into a post about grappling and they were talking about grappling on the ground. Now I'm confused! Does this mean that what I refer to as grappling shouldn't really be called that? Or what? Help....

What you are calling grappling is correct, and so is ground fighting. In Kenpo, we specify grabs and pulls and such while on your feet as stand up grappling. We use the general term grappling for rolling on the ground and grunting a lot with another fighter. Pretty much, whenever you are locked up or tied up with another fighter, you are grappling.

In my school, what you were refering to is called counter grappling. Which is getting out of and countering what your partner throws at you (locks, throws, headlocks, armbars, ect). It's all standing. We do ground fighting, which we simply called grappling.

It depends on the school and what they call stuff. Not every place is the same. But what you said IS grappling. There's standing grappling and ground fighting grappling.

I hope that made sense. I'm tired LOL.

It IS grappling, but if your referring to wat everyone means when they are talkin about grappling they are likely talking about groundfighter or at least takedowns, not juss clinching.

"razor elbows, killer knees, iron fists and monster kicks"

"Nice punch!!!, now let's see how well you punch with a broken arm"
