Should you spend years ( like me ) training for martial arts? The thing is that most punks now a days carry guns not fight, so should you be trained to fight or trained to shoot?

Be as a tranquil pool of water in the woods. Calm, collected, reflecting on its surface all that is around it. Make your own mind such a quiet mirror reflecting the mind of the opponent. Even as your partner's impulse to attack passes through his mind it should be reflected in you.

It depends. Are you more willing to hit someone or kill them?

And it doesn't take alot of time to learn how to handle a firearm.

think of it this way, how often are you going to be caring a side arm.....not too often i hope, so therefore, learn how to shoot and control a gun. Also train on how to deal with guns in self defense, how to remove them and take control of the gun yourself, change the tide on the dumb punks that pull the gun on you, yet be prepared this takes lots of training and only be prepared to fight back if you truely believe that your life is in danger, if you mess up on this self defense you are dead , plain and simple. Think about it.

Fight.

I don't know about where you live, but where I live, law abiding citizens CAN'T carry a gun down the street. Even if you could, what if they have a knife? Trained officers need 25 ft of room to effectively deal with an knife attacker by using their handgun (it has to do with the fact that a person can still stab you after they've been shot), according to several studies; how much space would you need? Officers also take a significant amount of training involving keeping their sidearm out of the reach of the person they are arresting - anything you bring to a fight can just as easily be used AGAINST you.

What if there is more than 1 attacker?

If there is more than 1 attacker, there is even more of a chance of someone disarming you.

If they are standing there with their firearm drawn, it is probably too late to draw yours, unless they really weren't planning on using it anyway, don't you think?
