1ESEERG Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Once a Judo person gets a grip, it all over for someone who is not a trained grappler.
shazaam Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 Yes, Judo reigns. Just add Boxing, Muay Thai and a little BJJ...you will be Ultimate Fighter. Peace, Love, Harmony
goshinman Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 A good judoka would be able to cripple a street punk for life if he had to. It has awesome ground work and awesome throws, sweeps, and takedowns so be it clinch range or on the ground judo has it covered. Tapped out, knocked out, or choked out...Take your pick.http://jujitsu4u.com/http://www.combatwrestling.com/http://gokor.com/

Just add Boxing and a couple of elbows, low kicks and eye gouges (which some do I understand) and you have the best traditional art that's out there. Or is that jiu-jitsu? Peace, Love, Harmony
CloudDragon Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 Judo really isn't that bad for self defense, one just has to approach it from a realistic standpoint and remember that its not a sport on the street and adjust it accordingly. A Black Belt is just a white belt that don't know when to quit!
Venezolano Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 I think it's good for self defense, but you should practice some throws without the GI so you be more realistic,,, (at least you live in a cold place where people wear jackets most of the time) Valencia - Venezuela.
ShaolinBlade Posted November 8, 2003 Posted November 8, 2003 The concept of incorporating several different striking techniques along with Judo make it a very effective art. Judo by itself is already pretty good but we rely on counter attacks more so than attacking someone. So to get in close sometimes means sacrifice to pull off the throw. Most of our damage is done after the throw when our opponent is hitting the ground. In my experience i would recommend taking boxing, karate, or any other striking training before you do Judo. https://www.kimsookarate.comKrav-Maga, Tai Chi Chu an, Karate, Aikido, Hapkido, Taekwon Do, Judo
Coudo Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 judo is great for self defence, you can choose to only throw your opponnent so that he gets shocked for a while and you earn a little bit of his respect, in most cases that would mean the end for a fight. The added bonus that comes with this is that you wouldt physically damage your opponnet in a way that he would sue. If I were to defend myself in a streetfight there would be a pretty big risk for me getting sued since I practise boxing. I know how damageing a punch is and I would avoid getting hit at every cost, and then I would punch back with such strength so that I know he wont get up and attack me again. There is no way for me to defend myself without hurting the guy. Judo has a great advantage there. But ofcourse this is in case of a brawl in a bar or similar, in a real lifethreatning situation I would be really glad that I chose boxing. I have taken a self-defence course that had very much judo in it (partially because the trainer was a judo silver medalist in the world championships). And I, plus a few of my friends, took everything there very seriously and we reallly learned alot. That course combined with boxing is really the best combination you could have. the fact that I only had this course for 1 month and it was 2 years ago, plus that I have been boxing now for a year results in that i have almost forgot all the judo that i've learned. The things I havent forgot is for example how you should bend the hand so that it hurts like hell, and stuff that i can still use if somebody attcks me with a knife for example.
