Icetuete
something i dont quite get (i'm a newbie though, so pls dont throw any insults for such a stupid question )is for what purpose people train fight with weapons. it is hard to believe that u use them for self defense because how can u carry ur katana around at any time? is it for fun then? do u enjoy the use of weaponry? what other reasons are there? SBN Doug
I don't think it's that dumb a question. The practicality of using a sword, etc., is a viable quandy. As for myself, I like to study weapons partially for the fun, and partially for the selfish reason of being able to say I know how. There are, however, a number of weapons that a still quite practical even today. The cane, rope (or belt), staff, short sticks to name a few are all easily utilized in a real life situation. As for the sword....it's just fun. Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing.
Aamorn KSW
In addition to being fun, they provide strength training and certain weapons can help develop certain motor skills. Aamorn - KSW Chuhng Di
karate_woman
Weapons are an extension of your arm. Also, once you get used to doing things with weapons, you can adapt the techniques to everyday objects as well - umbrellas, pens, canes, garden tools, baseball bats, hockey sticks, brooms and walking sticks are a few that come to mind that would be found in many places, and be used like some of the weapons you'd use in class. Icetuete
In addition to being fun, they provide strength training and certain weapons can help develop certain motor skills. i guess that is not the main reason for there are other training methods that will train u at these skills more effective...! good point at karate_woman...! but u often dont have any garden tools at hand which brings me back to the question whether u always carry something with u that can be used as a weapon (or the weapon itself). i guess a good kick/punch/grappling technique is more effectiv than an umbrella-strike-attack that an old grannys perform. sry, just kidding, but i think u got my point. No, I don't carry things around with me with the purpose of using them as a weapon. My point was more along the lines of anything can be used as a weapon, and there are lots of situations where you might have a potential weapon handy - even when out tending the garden. As for the umbrella - didn't you see Shanghai Knights? The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. -Lao-Tse
tommarker
Umbrella techniques can come from those taught for the cane, which can also come from fencing and bayonet fighting methods. Having a golf umbrella thrust into my solar plexus doesn't sound like a pleasant way to end my evening. I'm no longer posting here. Adios.
