karate_woman Posted June 18, 2003 Posted June 18, 2003 What does a black belt mean these days? That you have memorized some patterns and kata? Done 1vs1 at slow motion speed? Not to some of us, which is why seeing a 3.5 year old getting a black belt and a 6 year old getting a 3rd degree black belt is a joke. A MA that contains kata should have a lot more to it than memorizing kata - doing the kata and understanding the kata are totally different concepts; a dancer can probably learn a kata very well, but unless they'd been taught everything else that goes along with it, and been given the time to explore it for themselves, it will be little more than a fighting dance to them. I completely agree Karate Woman, but over and above that, how many 3 1/2 year olds do you know with the attention span to memorise that many katas in the first place?? This is beyond weird... granmasterchen Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 i need to go smack these people, last time i checked i had to WORK for my black belt, this is just a terrible terrible thing, i thought it was getting bad before, but thanks kirves, maybe i will go to this school and get another black belt, or maybe i can just give one of the kids some candy and they will give me a belt too, i bet i could learn alot from these young masters........someone put a bullet in my head That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
