Drunken Monkey Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 one thing you mentioned is that the so called tradition martial arts are not meant for fighting and in a way i can see how you can come to this conclusion. however, i have to say that it is not the style that is not meant for fighting but rather the students these days are not taught to fight with the style. martial arts in the past were used for defending oneself and often, this meant defending your life, not just winning the fight. this alone proves that the traditional styles work. it's just how/what people are taught that has changed. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
Treebranch Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 Please MuayThai Fighter don't claim so much because you make yourself look bad. All Prankration sounds like is MMA with a cool name. Not everyone is going to be a good fighter no matter how much training, there's always someone better. If a person that is a natural fighter studies any fighting art and the goal is competition, in 6 months this guy will be dangerous. Are you that guy? Probably not. Anyone with the desire to fight and the discipline to learn will be a proficient fighter in a fair amount of time. Now if your aunt Emma wanted to take a Martial Arts class would you say,"hey study Prankration" of course you wouldn't. Aunt Emma isn't the kind of person that would want to do something so violent and dangerous, she's a sweet heart. Now Emma's son Joe the jock he'll be pretty good at it, he's constantly getting into fights anyway. Might as well train him to fight in the ring, maybe it will give him some discipline. Basically if your personality and temperment fit well with Prankration than go for it. It sounds like repackaging to me. But if you like it great go for it. Claiming it's the Ulimate MA and the TMA's are outdated is just plain ignorant. I could easily strip down Budo Taijutsu of all the interesting stuff and concentrate on the striking and grappling aspects of it, and train like a monkey. This would make me a pretty effective fighter, but that's not why I study this stuff. I study it because I enjoy it. I don't plan on competing or beating people up, I did that and I don't like it. SandanPJ Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 ^^^ well said MMA lacks a lot of stuff that traditional styles have, and vise versa.... One is not better than the other. And the 6 month to 10 year comparison is not a provable stat.
JohnnyS Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 What you need to realise MuayThaiFighter, is that a lot of people honestly don't care about being the best fighter.I used to be similar to you when I was young (although not-quite as gung-ho), but grew out of it. When you're young you want to prove to yourself (and others) that you can fight, so you do it either in the ring or on the streets. I worked as a bouncer for 7 years in some rough clubs, got in plenty of fights and have also competed in tournaments and MMA events. Now I'm at the ripe-old age of 32, my body doesn't cope quite as well with so many injuries and I just don't feel the need for it anymore. Nor do I see the need to denigrate other people and their arts like you're doing. One of the best arts I studied for street-fighting was also one of the most traditional arts - Okinawan Goju-Ryu. It contained in-close fighting (including knees which it didn't get from Thailand ), elbows, headbutts and stand-up grappling. Was the stand-up grappling as sophisticated as wrestling ? No, but it still worked on guys in pubs and clubs. So maybe you should learn to be a bit more civil, a bit more understanding of why people train, and learn a bit more about other arts before you denigrate them. You might also want to learn more about your own art before spouting what you believe is the Gospel e.g. Thai-boxing having anything to do with ancient pankration.
