hiya,

i'm a soon to be a 29 yr old girl and 5'2"and slightly chunky. anyhow, i would like to take martial arts but i have no idea what kind. there are sooo many choices!! when i was 10 yrs old, my bro and i were taking free karate classes given by 2 cops at their homes. it was great but i am pretty positive one of the exercises(legs opened, knees bent, moving from side to side-going all the way down) messed up my knees because ever since i have bad knees. so, giving y'all my "medical " background, is there a style that would fit my knees? i mean needs?

thanks for y'alls help!

I hope you ment Austin Tx. I found a boat load of places:

http://www.martialway.net/about.htm This one as a few MA's in their school.

http://www.swshaolin.com/ This one is Kung fu.

http://www.uctaekwondo.com/ TKD

http://www.kenpo-texas.com/index1.html Kenpo

http://www.texastaekwondo.org/ Another TKD place.

http://www.pkckarate.com/ Another TKD place.

http://www.geocities.com/jang_sul/index.html Amix of Hapkido and other arts.

http://allfightingarts.com/vsdc/main.asp A Kempo school.

http://www.santamariaskarate.com/ Jhoon Rae TKD

http://www.firefist.com/ Kung Fu

http://www.centerofmartialarts.com/ Tang Soo Do and other stuff

http://taijilife.tripod.com/home.html Taiji

http://www.atanow.com/ ATA TKD

And there was many others I found without websites. There is a pretty good choice of MA in your area.

What I would suggest is checking out several schools and see what you like/are looking for. Tai Chi helps build knee problems from what I hear. I am a Korean MA geek, so I donno much on Tai Chi. But I hear it's good for the health. I may try it someday for my knee problems. Try out free trial programs that many MA schools have, and see what you are comfortable with.

correction: not to flame here, but nothing i read on the website

could be construed as gungfu, if by gungfu you mean Traditional Chinese Martial Arts. tukong moosul is a korean martial art.

"It is not how much you know but how well you have mastered what you've learnt. When making an assessment of one's martial arts training one should measure the depth rather than the length".

I don't know which you should do. I know I'm hoping a Krav Maga place opens up soon becaue I've heard some good things about that. I heard somewhere that's the the military uses for hand to hand combat. I'd go with karate though. I've been doin it a month and there is nothing that is really hard on the knees. I think maybe the two cops may have just been teaching incorrectly.

hmm let me see, 29 year old? bones ageing, about to turn 30, you need to relieves stress, keep fit, improve health, as after 30 your health will deprove if you dont exericse or train. martial arts lesson learnt by probably joking cops?, (which means unproper).

chunky? oh fat you mean? need to burn that! the way of burning fat?cardiovascular workout ofcourse!. where cardiovascular work found? sport kickboxing, karate will offer you the safest of practices. if i were you i woundnt do muay thai, due to your messed knees. also you can do tai chi to improve your health, as tai chi is the worlds greatest martial art for healing and improving internal health. decision is yours, wana stay fit, loose fat, kickboxing, karate as they are the safest. improve internal health, and heal yourself, also to learn self defense, then the martial art from china, tai chi.
