WhiteBelt Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 Are these compatable? I was looking for some JJ near by, but all I could find was a lonely MT gym looking for me to join. I can't get enough of MAs. All I need is more time.
AndrewGreen Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 No, they are incompatible if you are doing karate in a "traditional" way. The posture is different, the defencive structure is different, the kicks are thrown differently and the punches are thrown differently. If you can keep the skills seperate you can do both, but they are not compatible. Andrew Greenhttp://innovativema.ca - All the top martial arts news!
GreenDragon Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 Andrew is correct, they are actually highly incompatable. I would highly recommend against doing both. I took karate and switched to MT. Out of habit I still perform karate blocks every once in a while (which are quite different) and try to chamber punches, both of which will get me hurt during sparring. Your original idea of mixing a grappling art with a stand-up art was the most sound, stick with that idea, and stop looking for something near by. Ghost Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 SAme for me but i have managed finally to get rid of those inaffective Karate techniques.
SandanPJ Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 Karate, at least Kenpo Karate, only uses blocks and the chamber method up till about 4th kyu, then you dump it all and learn something totally usefull...Funny how everyone is taught wrong on purpose to prepare them for the real stuff.
WhiteBelt Posted June 13, 2003 Author Posted June 13, 2003 We don't chamber anything... but I understand about the stance. Isn't a MT stance square on the opponent? I usually stand however I want though in class. The blocks are used as strikes in sparring, and rarely at that.
WhiteBelt Posted June 13, 2003 Author Posted June 13, 2003 Well it's only 70 CDN a month, so I can always try it out for a month. I think the head instructor was a one time champ in northern Thailand or something. I could be wrong though.
kajukenbo dad Posted June 18, 2003 Posted June 18, 2003 Ihave hear of a few Kajukenbo people cross trainning...Good Lock Practice is the best of all instructors...

I still bend my knees and do sweeping blocks sometimes... which my opponent loves! Let Us Turn The Jump Rope In Accord With Socialist Principles!
