SBN Doug
... dont make this a kind where this style is better than this one... Definately don't do that. Problem is, unless someone has practiced both, they have no business even discussing pros and cons. I would feel more comfortable if the question were about their similarities and differences. BKJ1216
I don't know enough about either my style, or shotokan to really list a lot of valid pros and cons. Heres what I see(pay no attention to how this list contradicts itself). Shotokan: pros: Lots of people practice it. cons: Man McDojos use this. Shudokan: pros: Not too many people use it. cons: Not too many peole use it. EDIT:: BTW Just to clear it up when I said I don't know enough about my own style because I'm only a white belt. Not because I haven't observed many things about my dojo, not to mention some other dojos in town. White Belt- Shudokan Karate
JohnnyS
My thoughts on Shotokan: Too linear. Too hard. Stances are too long. Too many of the good things of Okinawan karate have been taken out to suit Japanese ideals. Kensai
I've studied Shotokan and study Ki Aikido and Judo. Pro's Deep Stances Strong Technique Linear Cons Deep Stances Kata Grappling range limited Weapons training limited Internal training limited Conditioning limied. Ofcourse I can only go one what I learnt, I have no doubt there are some amazing Shotokan Schools, I just didnt go to one. Having never fought a Karateka with Ki Aikido or Judo, I wouldnt really know how things would pan out. I did I fight a challenge, I'd probably just use the Judo I know to drag them to the floor and tap them before Shotokanka TKO'd me.
monkeygirl
Arguments are a no-no in Comparative Styles, especially when they're off-topic I split off the argumentative posts in this thread. Remember, this shouldn't be about "which style would win in a fight", it should be more to compare the similarities and differences between Shotokan and your own style. From there, people can decide for themselves whether or not these similarities/differences are pros or cons. I don't know much about Shotokan, but I'm going to post so you guys can get an idea of what I'm talking about here. (going on speculation from what I've heard around the boards) From what I've heard, Shotokan uses a lot more katas than my Tae Kwon Do style uses. Personally, I wouldn't mind that because I enjoy kata. I've seen some tournament Shotokan fights on ESPN, and they seem to be right up there with Muay Thai in terms of brutality. This is much harder than the Tae Kwon Do point sparring my school does, even harder than the normal ("bloodthirsty" ) sparring we do in class. This would be a bit of a turn-off for me, because I'm fairly small and fragile...I can't really take or give that kind of punishment. Those are really the only comparisons I can make right now, but I hope you get the idea. Happy posting! 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard. sansoouser
Why don't you post what shotokan karate teaches mostly and we can compare it to our arts. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain. ninjanurse
I agree that you shouldn't compare a style that you haven't studied. I have studied Shotokan but I will not compare only comment. Everything that I have learned from my Sensei's I have taken with me on my journey as it is and will always be a part of me. It has influenced each art I have studied and given me a solid foundation to rely on. All martial arts have something to offer someone, and not all martial arts are for everyone.
