BKJ1216
This weapons is really, really, really, fun. We learned a kata already for it I think it's called nunchucky miso, or somethign smilar sounding. I love doing it I've been able to get it going like really fast too, which is kind of cool. What I'm wondering though is it normal to be training with nunckucku this early? The sensai said that most white betls don't. She also says that if we can do this one adequatley enough by the end of the class she'll teach us a bo kata too. monkeygirl
My dojo used to have a seperate weapons class where all belt ranks could learn weapons, including white belts. Usually it's a little easier to learn a weapon after you've gotten a few months/years of open-hand training. However, if you're gettin good instruction, there shouldn't be a problem. Training in weapons can actually help you improve your open-hand skills, since weapons are an extension of your body. Esepcially if you begin training with the bo staff...certain strikes and blocks with the bo are just like throwing punches, but you're holding a stick. What kind of nunchaku are you using? Foam with cord instead of chain is usually the best for beginners. The foam makes them safe, and the cord makes them nice and light. 1st dan & Asst. Budderfly
My answer would be the same as Monkeygirl's. Our Dojang also exposes all ranks to some weapons. Nunchuckus, Short & Long Staff and Escrima Sticks. Only Black Belts learns swordfighting techniques with the Kendo.

SaiFightsMS
I remember in what I read about shudokan about the inclusion of weapons training as part of the regular cirriculum. Is there a rotation with a certain weapon being taught at a certain rank or it there a rotation timewise like we do nunchaku this year and sai next year? BKJ1216
I really dont' know. I asked my sensei if I shoudl go to a make up class to learn the kata becaue I missed a day, she said she's the only one that does it in first year. SandanPJ
In NCK Kenpo, weapons are only taught for 4th kyu and higher. Most of our black belt forms are with the bo and kama.
