BKJ1216
Yeah I just finished my first month of karate classes. We've learned 1 and a half katas, the complete one is a nunchuku kata, the other one is one I have no idea how to spell and won't make an attempt to. I just want to know if this is normal or not. My teacher is great, she explains everthing quite well, and I've been able to pick up fast. White Belt- Shudokan Karate
ninjanurse
In my experience most martial arts do not teach kata to brand new students. They are usually not begun until you have studied for several months and have been promoted at least once. What martial art are you studying? ninjanurse
HMMMM.....I believe they teach the heians, the first one usually learned at yellow belt. Are you learning the first half of heian shodan? If so, that may be proper to teach the other half after you are promoted. All schools have their differences . BKJ1216
I dont' know the specific name, but that sounds osmewhate similar. They're going to teach us the full thing before we are promoted. It's one of the kata we have to know before we are promoted. Normally we have to do it three times. But we are going to know tree kata. At the end we will be learnign a bo kata. ninjanurse
It seems like a whole bunch of kata to learn as a beginner. How long until you will be able to test? Normally there is about 3-4 months between belt tests until you reach purple, then the time gets longer...up to six months. BKJ1216
It's 4 months until we get to yellow belt. All the learning times are 4 months then we test. White Belt- Shudokan Karate

G95champ
Not Shotokan. Most of our students are lucky to learn one kata every 3 or 4 months. We do a kata per belt which is pretty common. However we drill and drill and drill kata. Doing the moves is not learning it. Keep working BK. (General George S.
