In our school it takes about 2 1/2 to 3 years IF you work at it. We're a small school, so an advanced student can actually get between 10-12 classes in per week. If a student really comes to the majority of them, they can move up a belt every 3-6 months.

In practice, however, only one guy with no other form of a social life puts in that much time. Most of us go around 6 hours/week. At that rate, it'll take 3 years or so. That's assuming of course the person is actually progressing during that time.

it took me about 2 years and 4 months but we have a thing called no-changes and if you get that you stay at that rank till your next testing. And if you are a red belt and above you have to break wood and then if you don't break you get a no change and you work harder. Then when you are actually a Black belt you have to know the other forms below your rank and your one-step sparring stuff. But I am now a 3rd Degree which I am one of the Highest ranking females in my school along with 2 other ladies. But it takes you how ever long you make it. And you keep working and working until you get there. But with no no changes then you get it in 2 years!

Getting your blackbelt shouldn't be the most important thing to you.

Its not the belt that says how good you are as a martial artist its the person. It doesn't matter what belt you wear you are the same standard, you don;t suddenly increase in skill and speed because you put on a black belt.

The question really should be how long till i am at the standard of the black belts in my system. Then even this question can't be answered because what is the standard of 1st dan? you will probarly get some really good 1st dans and some bad ones.

You shouldn't measure your progress by belt colours, but by personal achievment. Like when you spar with x, then spar with x a few months later are you doing better, or making x work harder. I hope you can see what i'm saying.

Who cares if it takes 2.5 years in one system and 5 in another. Maybe that says something about the standard of teaching or the people. Look at Bjj that takes 10 years to get 1st dan. But the standard of the 1st dans is sooo high.

A black belt is a good achievement, it takes about 4 years in TKD, 3 times a week for 4 yrs, Belt Colour should matter though.... it's just a belt. However if you are and excellent fighter with a black belt that is a dofferent storey. I have spared with a lot of balck belt who were not the best fighters and some that kicked my a@@. If you train hard and love yuor art it shouldn't really matter what colour of belt you are.
