Hi!

On the 18th of this month I will be 17 and have decided to enter the Navy through the DEp program. I have called the recruiting office and left a message, in the mean time I wondered if I could get a question answered here. When you enlist, just as you can request your rate, and fill out a dream sheet of where you would like to be stationed, can you request which vessel you wish to serve on in sea duty? I would like to serve aboard an air craft carrier like my dad did (he really enjoyed it) and will be (hopefully) a MAA. Thanks for your help.

I have one MAJOR suggestion: get your dad or a person you trust that has been in the military (any branch will do) to come with you to the recruiting office!! The military is great and everything, but military recruiters are notorious for being not-exactly-honest. I have a bunch of family and friends that have been involved in the military, and I've heard so many horror stories about recruiters using methods they aren't allowed to use. They have a tendency to gloss up things and make them seem nice and rosy, make promises they can't keep. (Ever seen "Private Benjamin"? It's kinda like that)

Don't let that keep you from enlisting, though! You just need to be a little cautious around the recuiters, that's all (no offense to any recruiters we may have on KF ;) ).

lol, yes its one of my favorite movies. ive talked with my dad a lot about joining, he has been back and forth but has agreed to sign my DEP (delayed entry program) papers, ive also learned how to tell truth from myth but when i do go, at least the first time, to the recruiters office my dad will be with me. Though honestly, id feel more comfroble going with my uncle, he was army not navy but i feel more at ease about talking to recruiters with him. but he is in bosnia.

I spent 4 years in the Army, 4 years Navy and my wife was 10.5 years Navy, including time as a Navy Counselor. When requesting a duty station, there is a place to put the name of a specific ship/duty station on the form. The problem is, when a detailer assigns you to a duty station, he (or she) has a list of billets available and can only choose from them. The primary consideration is to try and "fit" you to where the military needs you and in a position for which you were trained. A secondary consideration would be getting stationed with spouse/family members. Your request for location would only be a tertiary consideration with the specific command or ship being last! The best success is usually acheived by visiting the detailers IN Person at the Bureau in Washington, DC! (The farther you travel to see them, the more impressed they are!) This trip is not feasible for your first command but a good idea for any subsequent ones.
