Drunken Monkey
sorry, just trying to lighten it up a bit. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite." Prodigal Son
Hi guys This is my first post on this list, so I hope I don't bore anyone or upset you all with my opinions... I think that before taking up any art it is wise to look at your own structure and choose an art which suits it. If you are a big powerful bloke, then it doesn't matter too much which style you use on the street as most of the blows you recieve will not put you down, and those that you land will be very effective. Take up Karate and get a black belt in two years. If you are not so big and strong, you will have trouble putting a larger opponent down even with a good punch - so I would suggest a martial art which uses fouler methods, such as Wing Chun - IF you can find a teacher who is any good. 15 years to become a Sifu. Kicking styles ? Not so good in confined spaces (bars, busses, churches etc.) or against close range fighters such as myself. Looks very impressive though. Also ask yourself how dedicated you will be. Some of us train for hours every day and our art is a 'path' - others want to train just enough to protect themselves, so something complex like Wing Chun or Aikido would not be the best investment of time. aznkarateboi
which is more effective (in general) for self defense?
Ti
Kung Fu hands down. The stances to balance in Karate just don't seem to wrok as well as Kung Fu and Kung Fu is faster. IMO.
quigley_321
Well, karate is a hard style and depends on strength mostly, so if you went against a big guy like Mike Tyson and tried to block his punch straight on it might break your arm where as in Kung Fu the more power he used the power you would be able to use against him. So it's an opinon again, but just saying Karate is based on strength and Kung Fu is usually redirecting the force but not always they have hard blocks too. Treebranch
Original Karate used to move as they blocked. I don't know what happened. Over time it seems like they just stand there and block with their arms only. There is more power generated by the body than the arms. stephen lee
my thoughts are: each situation confronted, that you may need to use a MA, is purely"SITUATIONAL" not one will ever be the same. where a form or technique will work better in a given point of a situation, than a nother. Personally, I believe that for me, WuShu, if a variety styles are studied, will cover all aspects of a given situation. perhaps the reminder that WuShu has been develloped for the past 3,000 years, can testify to its completeness. if studied correctly. yet a comprison between any two martial arts, should not be represented by the art, mabey moreso the practitioner... for no two are the same! Wheras one practitioner would apply one thechnique, a nother may doso differently, with more or less effect. so, how could two arts be compared in a winning situation, mabey its the fighter, not the art.......... Peace, Stephen Lee. the color of a belt, can be a false sence of accomplishment.
hobz
I was once told that original karate is more spiritual then kung fu. This true? Rule #1: Play the game to the limit. Damn the consequences.
stephen lee
that again is impossible to compare... lets use some common sence: I could be a KungFu practitioner with immoral behavior. stand me next to a Karate practitioner with good morals... Who is more spiritual.... What is each's definition of "spiritual".... What IS "spiritual"... it is the Practitioner.... NOT the art... the color of a belt, can be a false sence of accomplishment. Prodigal Son
Karate vs Kung Fu can be likened to a bazooka vs a pistol. Sure, the bazooka has loads of power - but if I can pick up my pistol and shoot you in the face before you pick up and aim yer bazooka, then the power issue is academic. Biu Jee needs very little power to be horribly effective I'm not dissing Karate (I did Shoto for four years, some Wado and Shorinji Kempo), but IMHO KF (at least Wing Chun) is just so much more complex in it's structure, faster and more vicious on the street. All this depends on your teacher, tho... And as we grow older, our power naturally fades. So as an old men or women who study Karate we will naturally be beaten by younger stronger opponents. Our sensitivity and technique can improve until the day we die though, and because of this many old men in the Wing Chun world are fearsome fighters into their seventies - even though us youngsters are blatantly stronger. Look at all these 'Full Contact' Karate styles - those guys hit each other AS HARD AS THEY CAN, over and over, and still don't knock each other out. Are they learning to give out beatings, or to take them ? Like I say, I am no way dissing Karate so I hope no one is upset by my opinions.
