Sho-ju: How can you do Shotokan full contact? Isn't Shotokan practised without any protection whatsoever?

We study shotokan karate and grade based on shotokan. We study kumite in the traditional shotokan fashion but also study kumite in the same vain as Mas Oyama.

When we spar it doesn’t like the point style of shotokan that was made popular during the 1950’s but more like kyokushin. We do not punch to the face unless the karateka is a brown belt and wearing boxing gloves. It must also be stated that sparring full contact is not necessary to progress through the belt levels. We do wear protection to prevent burses on the knuckles and body. The area in which I live is not known for shotokan and we have little contact with other shotokan dojo we do have close contact with Isshin ryu, Shogen ryu and Shorin ryu clubs that study full contact kumite.

In my school, we spar "full-out." We can't punch to the face, or hit the groin area, but it does happen. We don't "pull punches." It's full strength kicks and strikes. We do where pads for added protection, but it doesn't always help :o In grappling, anything goes, except finger locks, and no striking to the face or groin.

*looks at her feet and arms* Dang! speaking of sparring ..... sheesh. I look like I got my but kicked by a black belt ........... ummmm *smacks herself on the forhead* I did :o :brow:

If you are going to spar full contact, and you have knuckle guards on, why not go to the face? We rarely spar full contact, but we DO do it, and we are allowed to punch to the face. Maybe because it is realistic and everyoen shoudl know how it feels to get hti in the face?

In the higher ranks, yes, we tend to spar at a controlled semi -full contact in class. Lower belts use light contact.

For those who want to go full contact at my school, the opportunity is definitely there ;)
