wcnavstar Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 I just want to know what everyone of you have to say about the reasons you each study the martial arts and why you have chosen the one or many that you do. What do you hope to gain from your martial art training? What are the qualities that manke someone a true martial artist? And do you feel that you posses those qualities? Please discuss in great detail, or as simply as you think it is! Very Respectfully wcnavstar "We work with being, but non-being is what we use" Tao Te Ching

WC-Strayder Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 I choose Wing Chun Kung Fu by shear luck!. I didn't even know what it was before my first class, but I fell in love with it at onse!. My goal is to defend my-self and those I love and to get in good shape. If I can choose I don't think I ever gonna stop with Wing Chun, it is soo many great things to learn and soo mush to do. My first goal right now is the yellow sash, but thats not the reason I train, the reason is that I wanna learn more...... to become deep inside Wing Chun, thats my end goal!!. It gives me great tools, both in a fight and in real life! If the first lesson was a failure, then you know that skydiving isn't for you!
ahgao Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 In Singapore, where crime rate is relatively low, the practise of martial art for self-defence is not seen as main draw. After the years of learning wushu, it had help me gain confident and gain friendship. I have actually wriiten a post on What Have Wushu Taught You!. Anzie Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 What do you hope to gain from your martial art training? What are the qualities that manke someone a true martial artist? And do you feel that you posses those qualities?Hope to gain great skills in self defense Also, I hope seeing myself win some Shootfighting tournaments Qualites: Almost first and foremost, skill. Effort put into the art. And the interest for the MA. Yeah, some of it I'm not very skilled (yet). However, I put lots of effort into my training and my interest is huge. Shorin Ryuu Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 As I always rather vocally profess, my main purpose for studying the martial arts is for its combative purposes. I study it for the practical application and for the ability to defend myself and protect loved ones should the need arise. All the other benefits, such as discipline, humility, confidence, etc., are appreciated and come with the training, but are not my primary motivation. What makes a good martial artist is of course technique. However, if they are only skilled in technique and do not possess traits of self-restraint, discipline, and humility then they are simply good fighters and not martial artists. I think this is something we all agree on. I think there is also something to be said for an innate grasp of the mechanics of fighting as well, although this can also be trained. Do I possess these traits? I think I do, to some extent. I try to be as open-minded and humble as possible, but occasionally my self-confidence crosses over into too much pride, but I am usually able to keep it in check. As far as technique goes, I consider myself fairly adept, and welcome any opportunity to practice my skills or learn new ones (in a controlled environment, I mean, not going out and picking fights). Of course, I still have a long ways to go till I can consider myself a master, but I think that is true for everyone, no matter how skilled. Martial Arts Blog:http://bujutsublogger.blogspot.com/

YoungGrasshopper Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 Well I am a short pretty skinny person for my age, so people predict little of my power . Which is what I love about martial arts, gives me confidence and all that..heh. But I don't try to show off or anything like that...since it irritates me when I see someone else who tries to show off, I would never want to become like that. I have only 2 hobbies, martial arts and computers. So, if I haven't been..training, I'd be fat and short and be on the comp all day. It's always tyte to spar with someone around your age or weight that practices. Though it's kinda lame cause there aren't really any good people around where I live, considering that all the damn dojos here are money hungry!!! Haha wtf I'm going off topic... Anyways, martial arts rox0rs...did so mUch for me.
