I am currently learning a Bo Kata called Matsuhiga No Bo.

Has anyone heard of this Kata?

And I thought it was hard to find room in my house to practice plain old Katas? Now I need room to swing the Bo. Thank goodness summer is here.

I have never practiced bo inside my apartment. There is a community area in my apartment complex I have trained in. There are times a backyard would be a good thing to have.

I've performed in competition one year, and when I went to swing the bo around my body, I lost my grip :o , and my bo rolled up to the judges feets. Lucky for me the next year at the same comp, I held onto the bugger :brow:

I wonder how many judges get hit by flying weapons. I remember one test we did with a large group doing nunchaku for the first time. Sensei made a point to tell everyone to hang on to them.

I do Matsu Higa No Bo; it is currently my favourite bo kata. :D I can't practice it at home...well, maybe in the garage or back yard, but not in the basement. Chatan Yara No Bo is cool too though I can't do it by myself yet.

I love the bo and look forward to continuing to learn this weapons Kata. :-)

I also look forward to learning more of its Bunkai. Like what are the 3 pairs of cat stance steps with a shito for at the start?

BTW my daughter performed this weapons kata in competition this past weekend and took 3rd! She only learned it 3 weeks ago! As you can tell I am very proud :-)

Congratulations for her! What belt level is she?

I love the kata but I have found it is too short compared to some of the more advanced bo kata I've seen. Yesterday at our shiai, a woman from our club did matsu higa no bo and another competitor did a kata that was about 3 times as long, with many more techniques in it (I wish I'd caught the name - awful since I was helping judge, but it was LOUD). Anyway, both people performed well, but the longer, more complicated kata won hands down. This was at the brown belt level, though.

She is Gold/Black and about 2 weeks away from her Orange belt test.

Wow! Awesome job! Impressive kata indeed at yellow belt - I didn't see anyone below red belt performing a bo kata on Sunday, and certainly not Matsu Higa No Bo!
