White Warlock Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 The other day i went to the hardware store and saw a girl standing outside at the hotdog stand with her friend, ordering a dog and a drink. She was probably 14 years old, wearing her GI and a black belt. On the back of her GI were the words, "Kwon's Black Belt Academy." Nuff' said. ramymensa Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 She wears the karategi outside the dojo? Yuck. The only time I was wearing it out was when I would jump into my BF's car in order to go home. It was winter, dark outside and I was wearing a wintercoat. anyway ... going shopping in your karate outfit is quite childish. And the BB Academy .. that's screaming McDojo. It was nice if she would have been buying fries World Shotokan Karate
HongKongFooey Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 interesting that you should mention this as i will be gaining my black belt next march, i will still be 16 when i recieve it. i am taking the test no different to lets say a 30 year old would take, i personally feel that i have the knowledge and discipline to deserve one Here is what HobbitBob was talking about, Ad. What makes you think you deserve it? The fact that you stated that you WILL be obtaining your BB next march, kind of sits uneasy with me. Did your instructor promise you this rank, or are you just trying to keep a positive attitude? HKF Welcome to McDojo's! One supersize blackbelt coming right up sir!At Mcdojo's, your ability to succeed is only limited by the size of your wallet, and we back that up in writing!
Drunken Monkey Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 don't confuse the guy who's been training since the age of ten and happens to get awarded his first black belt at sixteen with the guy who joined a place that said he would get his black belt in two years time or the guy who wants to get his black belt by the time he's sixteen. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
cymry Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 The most ridiculous McDojo I have seen is actually right in North Wales - John Lynn's Black Belt Academy. They hold special weekend courses where kids younger than ten years old can receive a dan grade. Each one you go to, you get a higher dan grade. They really have 12 year old 3rd dans. Of course, these ranks are not recognised by any other school, organisation or governing body other than their chain of schools. And it's not hard to get a black belt either. Recently I saw a front page photo of a girl in a deep front stance with arms out to the side, saying she had received a brown belt in only two years. Guess what school she goes to? John Lynn's Black Belt Academy.
sansoouser Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 I think a black belt should be able to beat everyone with a lower belt rank in the dojo. Otherwise what's the point of it? Just for memorizing katas? And rehearsed moves? There was a time when a black belt meant the guy wearing it was trouble in any back alley. http://www.loompanics.com/Articles/SportingLife.html that article has some good points The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.

Spaceman Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 There was a McDojo down my street, TKD, and he told me he could tell me how much it would cost me for my black belt if I wanted to pay upfront..... YEA RIGHT!!!! That has to be one of the worst McDojo's in the world. The least the guy could do is have some tact. If you're going to sell garbage, at least polish it first. I'm magic. It's just that if I showed my magic in public, people would die, and I don't want that kind of burden to live with.
sansoouser Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 14? I dunno, I don't think a belt means much anyway. My sensei told me how to get a black belt, and it went like this. When you get your belt it's a brand new white, after a while it turns yellow and orange from the sweat and slime that's gotten on it. Then the bacteria and slime build it to make it green, after awhile it turns brown wit dirt and after that it gets totally black from all the stuff that's happened to it.
