yireses Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 Almost all schools, at least chinese styles, start clases bowing and puting together there hands in a serten way. Is there a special meanig in that? or it's just some thing to do for respect or is ti a oriental tradition. Thanks in advance! wcnavstar Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 The meaning behind the fist and the open hand coming together in some schools represent Yin And Yang, Hard and soft, the ability to destroy as well as show mercy. It shows also that although you can kick some serious butt (the Fist) you cover that with a blanket of peace( the open hand over the fist.) In other words " I come in peace" . It is a greeting used often in China kind of like a hand shake. And it lets the other kung fu students around you know that you are there for practice and not for fighting. Used also as a sign of respect to the Sifu. "We work with being, but non-being is what we use" Tao Te Ching
paolung Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 in addition to what wcnavstar posted, many systems or schools will have their own "salute" which may symbolize many things... "It is not how much you know but how well you have mastered what you've learnt. When making an assessment of one's martial arts training one should measure the depth rather than the length". - MASTER "General" D. Lacey
ahgao Posted May 18, 2003 Posted May 18, 2003 The gesture of respect is to put your left palm over right fist at a level of your chest. The actual meaning is "Chor Qing Lung, Yeow Pak Fu" - Left Green Dragon, Right White Tiger. Also can be phrase as: "Mm Ho Say Hoi Kit Heng Dai" - Five River, Four Seas, all are brothers. The above saying are due to the legend and cutlural of Chinese. The green dragon & white tigher is due to spiritual beliefs and the rivers & seas are the landscape of ancient China. The are many other forms of respect, some have hidden meaning due to the Ching Dynasty where the Ming trying to overthrow the Ching. Alot of secret socitey are form and to hid from the Ching army, hand sign ang other posture are form. Some art like Wing Chun also have the hidden agenda of "Fun Ching Fok Ming" - overthrow the Ching Dynasty and rebuilt the Ming Dynasty... Drunken Monkey Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 i was always told that the holding of the hands is to physically represent the chinese character for ming which is the moon character (left hand open) and the sun character right handclosed) next to each other. the hands therefore are a symbol of those that were part of the rebellion against the ching people. seeing as most of these people were also trained in the martial arts, it bacame the standard greeting between martial artists. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
ahgao Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 ... the hands therefore are a symbol of those that were part of the rebellion against the ching people. ...The respect gesture was used even before the ching dynasty, so can really say it is for that purpose. Drunken Monkey Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 are you sure about it being used before the ching? it was the ching dynasty that destroyed the temple which caused the spreading of styles into the populace. before them, most training was done solely in the temple and the monks did not use that hand gesture. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
