King of Fighters Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 Does bjj have any punches, kicks, knees, elbows or anything like that? Im thinking of taking it but i wont take an art unless it has striking. I used to take judo before muay thai and i didnt like it because there was no striking and it never seemed effiective in any of the fights i was in. But now my muay thai class is closing and im looking for something else and 2 different places have bjj. so does it?

Venezolano Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 Then, don't get into BJJ, it has no striking Valencia - Venezuela.
TJS Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 BJJ does have some striking...You learn things like various knees from the certain positions..a few elbows...the large majority of it is grappling but i does have a handful of strikes..that is if it's a good school.

three60roundhouse Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 It all depends on what school you attend. In a lot of schools, striking won't be taught until a higher level. Often even throws aren't taught until one is capable of falling, escaping, and submiting a grounded opponent. Some schools do not even teach striking. It's all based on what the instructor is in to - some are judo men who also grapple, some are pure grapplers, and some crosstrain. My instructor is a 5th dan in TKD, a purple in BJJ, and has a decent amount of experience in muay thai. But in my jiu-jitsu class, no striking (I am a white belt, 2 stripes). Other instructors I have met teach it every class. If you look ared enough you will find what you seek. Good luck! 1st dan Tae Kwon DoYellow Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu16 Years OldGirls kick butt!
SevenStar Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 If judo didn't work for you in fights, you needed more training in it... As for your question, some bjj schools will teach you strikes - try visiting the school and asking them.
