Wraith Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 I know people post things like this over and over but... I'm 4'11", about 100 lbs, and I want to know what would be good for me. I want something that's practical (since I live in a *questionable* place), but also good (?) to watch. Suggestions anyone?

Kyokushin Karate Brazilian Jiu jitsu Muay Thai Boxing Krav Maga Judo TJJ..but it's hard to find a good school that will teach something effective.

Seriously, from what you say you want, AK is about as good as you'll get. *Effective- was designed for the American streets. *Practical- no wasted movement. No impractical moves. Combat/defense oriented. *Versatile- meant to be adapted to fit the practitioner and adjusted for the opponent. *Good to watch- AK flows. Has both hard and soft. Moves are fluid, yet extremely dynamic. *Trains understanding and application of principles of power. Especially good for smaller practitioners. Trains you to let your stances and your opponent do the work instead of relying on just muscle power. If there are American Kenpo schools in your area, I'd advise that you seriously check them out. Beware that we have our bad players, just like the rest. If you find one, drop me a PM and I'll try to find out about them, if you like. Other arts that may work for you (in no particular order, and not an exhaustive list by any means): Hapkido, Silat, PMA (Arnis, Kali, Escrima), Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) or almost any of the Chinese Martial Arts, and most of the other Kenpo/Kempo styles (there are several). Good luck in your search. Freedom isn't free!
Red J Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 Like Delta1, I think Kempo may be a good choice. Along with the adaptability, some schools also incorporate some classical material into their forms and katas, along with grappling and self defence. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.

I would list them in order of interest. Then after you've made the list of styles that are available, check them out. You may visit a dojo and realize that maybe it's not geared towards your goals. I am assuming that he meant practical for combat, and wushu is the exact opposite. that is not entierly correct, wushu was an very combative MA however in these day s its used more for health and flexibility. U say ur short and pretty light well i say go some kind of kung fu style or JDK thatt can complement ur speed and agility and makes up for ur lose in natural strength.
