I quite disagree - Karate has disciplined foundations; but where you go from there is limited only by youre ingenuity. My Karate fight style differs greatly from each other individual - it's more obvious if you watch a handful of a black belts or students with alot of experience. They have had time to refine their approach to what is best suited to them... Personally i have a great liking for both Kickboxing and Karate; it's probably because my greatest asset is my kicking abilities. However I do agree that Kickboxing has a more sporting/competitve edge to it - but that doesnt mean that Kickboxing is more about fighting then Karate or vice versa. Like Angus said both teach methods to combat... So in conclusion - both teach ways of combat but in different ways; but which do you choose? I would tend to take a moment to reflect on myself in order to decide - i'm quite light, I wouldnt be one to take up Sumo Wrestling. I have quick legs - I am more likely to train myself in martial arts which specialise in kicking and so on e.g Kickboxing of TKD. I'm not the strongest of blokes so i would try to incorporate or learn something that uses the Ying Vs Yang theory rather then the Yang Vs Yang....Gung Fu let say? But I hope you get my point - I've said this before, but hey - You cant say which art is better, but you can say which art is better for you. Kickboxing vs. Karate (Martial Arts).... We are not referring to "cardio" kickboxing here which is totally different from sport Kickboxing. I don't conclude that cardio kickboxing IS self defense but rather I teach my classes in a way where I (a Black Belt trained in self defense) incorporate basic self defense kicks & punches in my fitness kickbox class. I never implied that my students are going to go out and hit someone, and yes punching a bag is different than punching a person...I never said it was the same. Listen ....what makes my classes different than the average "cardio fitness" class is that I don't choreograph with shuffles, grapevines...dancy moves....I strictly use boxing techniques & stances and incorporate true kickboxing kicks and punches...now if you don't come away from my class learning some sort of defense procedures than youre brain dead. Let's get back on the right subject area now....K??? Deby I understand how you feel I think that kickboxing is not a SPORTORMARTIAL,it is just a reason for people to get in the ring and fight.A kickboxer is not strong put him up to a thaiboxer and see who wins.thai . kickboxing is a more woman style of thaiboxing[my bad if I spelled thai wrong]
SaiFightsMS Posted December 1, 2001 Posted December 1, 2001 People do become passionate about defending their choice of styles or schools. This is a classic and never ending discussion. But take the time out to think "if one style or school was perfect for everyone - there would not be some many". There are thousands of styles. The world is a big one. There is room for all of us. And personally I find the discussions about the pros and cons in here interesting.

If you are in it to learn how to fight and are willing to take alot more abuse then Karate. I know this has been here for a while now but I just had to pick up on this, I do mauy thai/kick boxing, and I have done karate, KARATE IS NOT JUST ABOUT FIGHTING AND IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A REAL FIGHTER DONT DO IT. thats is it is is no where near as hard on the body as mauy thai or kick boxing, I respect karate ka but it is not real hard fighting, even in free style. I feel blue dragon should kick a heavy bag 100 times with his/her shin, and then spar with some kick boxers, and see how much "abuse" his/her body can take. _________________ "perfection, is something we all get closer too with training, but you will never get there and untill you accept this your mind will be limited in what you can achive" - Dave [ This Message was edited by: dafabe on 2002-05-30 03:14 ] "perfection, is something we all get closer too with training, but you will never get there and untill you accept this your mind will be limited in what you can achive"- Dave
Eye of the Tiger Posted May 30, 2002 Posted May 30, 2002 There are three principles that martial arts are based on, some are based on one whereas others may inclued all of them. 1. Self defence 2. Sport 3. The art Kickboxing is a sport martial art whereas karate is based on self defence. If you want to learn probobly the best self defence martial art there is pick karate. If you want a sport where you don't mind taking a bit more pain and being a bit tough do kickboxing or do both.
