King of Fighters Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 Ok, heres the scoop. When I began muay thai i had a teacher named zubair. He was an excellent teacher and a great guy. About 3 or 4 months ago he quit and we got another guy named sean to teach. About a month ago, he got a promotion and he can no longer teach. Now we have a guy named C teaching (thats what everyone calls him because his real name is some long asian name). My friend who I met at muay thai class sais that C used to teach the class a long time ago but he quit because he has shiftwork at his job. C only comes like half the time and he hasnt been for the last 3 classes. This has made my parents really mad because nobody is teaching and it cost a fair bit of money. I think that my parents want to get thier money back for the rest of the year that we paid. I have looked around and there is no other muay thai gym in my city. There is a really good mt gym where my original instructor trained in a city near by, but my parents wont drive me that far. So what do you think I should do? Should I stay at my gym and use the wieghts and take a class whenever C can come? Or should a get my money back and take another martial art? The other arts In my area are a tae kwon do/hapkido class that mix the 2, Brazilian juijutsu, fitness kickboxing, kobudo, and there are like 7 or 8 different Karate dojos.
King of Fighters Posted May 8, 2003 Author Posted May 8, 2003 Im also looking into what classes are taught at the local university, so there may be more.
karate_woman Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 That's a tough one. It is hard to leave a style you are fond of, but without adequate instruction you aren't learning Muay Thai anymore, are you? It is ultimately up to you and your parents, but if you aren't getting adequate instruction it isn't worth the money in my opinion. If you decide to stop training at that club and your parents won't drive you to the other city to continue your training in Muay Thai, you could certainly look at taking another martial art in the interim (until you are able to make that decision independently), while trying to keep what you've already learned fresh by doing a few things at home (there are probably lots of things you guys can still do without partners...bag work, weights, etc). The Muay Thai people on here should be able to offer more wisdom on that. Will they let you get your money back and pay on a day by day basis (when C is teaching?). It might be nice to get some occasional Muay Thai workouts in at the club if Muay Thai is what you really want to do. As for what other style to choose, I think you should go with what fits best for you. I'd be a bit surprised if you chose fitness kickboxing after muay thai, but hey, maybe I'm wrong. BJJ might be a nice addition to your striking skills. Since you've lumped the karate schools into 7 or 8 different schools, I'm not sure you're even considering them, but depending on the style and the instructor they might have something that appeals to you too. The TKD/Hapkido place might as well - check out the ones that appeal to you The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. -Lao-Tse
