Dragon Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 Who here keeps there MA skills secret from other people. My mum and dad say that if i give it away people will "try and test me out". I dont really wanna fight. I got my black belt two years ago and people wanna look good when they beat up a blackbelt so i keep it a secret and only use it in protection of myself, friends or family. http://www.austers.co.ukOne must be like all changes of state.Solid - Tough and strong!Liquid - Relaxed and make your techniques flow!Gas - Fast!
King of Fighters Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 Well, I dont go around screaming to the world that i do martial arts, but my friends know that I do. If you are in a street fight it is a good idea to warn your attacker that you do martial arts so he will be aware then the police wont be as hard on you, but dont tell him what style, then it takes away the element of surprise.
paolung Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 i don't announce to anyone that i practice MA, and i certainly wouldn't announce to anyone i fought in a streetfight. it's not like any streetfighter would necessarily give you time to announce it in the first place "and in this corner..... practicing martial arts for years, it's Pao Lung... in the other corner"... nope, just not gonna happen. but my close friends do know. "It is not how much you know but how well you have mastered what you've learnt. When making an assessment of one's martial arts training one should measure the depth rather than the length". - MASTER "General" D. Lacey
HachiKyu Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 I wouldnt even tell the people on the street if i were to engage in street fighting that i take martial arts. i would let it be a little surprise and i would only tell the police if they asked. it makes them think they should go work out instead of working their stomachs and hands in coffee and doughnuts. karate_woman Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 I'd agree with NOT telling a street fighter you practice martial arts. If there is time, you could certainly warn them to back off, or whatever you like, but don't say..."hey I know martial arts!". Hell, it might even ENCOURAGE them to fight (ego thing) The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. -Lao-Tse
karatekid1975 Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 I don't tell strangers. But my friends (most of them do MA's of some sort, anyways), and family know. My boss knows cause her cousin is my old instructor. Laurie F
IAMA_chick Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 everyone knows about me being in tkd pretty much. like my family and friends. but what really makes em mad is that some of my family members don't take it seriously! Tae Kwon Do15-years oldpurple--belt
JohnnyS Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 If I had an altercation with someone in the street and they said they did martial arts - it'd be like a red flag to a bull. I wouldn't be able to help myself but want to smash them. BJJ - Black Belt under John Will (Machado)Shootfighting - 3rd Degree Black BeltTKD - Black Belt

G95champ Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 I don't give out info but I don't hide it either. I may wear my gi bottoms to workout in or show someone a move or something. I don't walk arround with a big sign that says hey Im a blackbelt.. Besides Im a lover not a fighter. LOL (General George S.
