fighting a karate ka vs fighting a street fighter

Recommended Posts

i think (and so does my dojo) that fighting a street fighter is going to be alot easyer than fighting someone who knows karate. My point on that is when you spar against a person that know karate, the person is going to be alot harder to get a reverse punch in or a front snap kick ect. than a street fighter would be. would you guys agree on that?

Personally, I'd much rather fight someone with a little training under their belt. Sure they'll know a few moves, and how to utilize their speed and power a bit better, but they'll follow some very predictable patterns depending on their style. A Karate-ka, especially, tends to get caught up in some basic sparring patterns.

Besides, I know of few karate dojos that'll teach proper defences againt a grab or lock, which just makes things so much easier.

LOL

Yes, I've seen a lot of "Proper" defences that really make things easier for the other guy.

Fighting a street fighter who knows Karate would not necessay mean they are going to win. It depends on the individual experience and their personal background. Although the street fighter who knows Karate would stand more chance you still cannot underestimate the opponent who doesn't train in martial arts is at street fighting. If one has had more real street fights with/without martial arts training, then they would know more about how to win street fights, but if both trains in martial arts then the street fight would be harder as both knows self defence skills, which would be more of a test of ability to see who is the better karate man on the street.

Most likely the advantage is of course the one who trains in martial arts, but he has to be aware and to be ready to expect the unexpected actions. The chance is 9 times out of 10 that the person training in martial arts would win street fights.

Im worried about those 'street fighters" who only throw fast wild, flaling punches with no control. they dont stop....I guess a snap kick to the nuts could stop them though. But it could go either way. If your fighting a person w/ some MA training, then you may know what to expect or how to defend your self against some of their attacks. But then again, if your fighting a street fighter, they may have dirty tricks up there sleve. but they won't be able to stop some of your attacks either. :brow:

street fighters are unpredictable untrained fighters. they dont follow any kind of rule, so you had better watch it. another thing- you wont be hopping around and dancing like you do in a sparring match. this guy will probably come in with a huge roundhouse or try to take you down. these guys arent gonna exchange kicks with you, they want you down on the ground so they can do whatever they want to you.

you have the advantage of having training and style, but they have the advantage of being unpredictable and style-less.

one more thing- alot of poeple train in martial arts. however, this does not mean they are ready for a real fight. alot of time martial arts does not prepare you for the arenaline rush or the freeze action and tunnel vision that alot of people get when adrenalized. you need to take one of those Fast Defence courses to understand better.

Your dojo thinks that it would be easier to fight a streetfighter than a karateka? Does this include your Sensei? I'm just wondering because I think it odd that a Sensei would give his/her students that kind of blanket statement - it could lead to overconfidence, which is not a good thing in my opinion.

We've always been taught to never underestimate our opponents, to avoid dangerous situations, carry ourselves with confidence so we aren't singled out as a target, etc. I guess it also depends on who the streetfighter is...is this a seasoned street fighter who has fought FOR THEIR LIFE a number of times, or just a punk in a bar trying to get into a fight to show off for his girlfriend? Do they have a weapon (I'd bet most street fighters would have at least a knife, if not other weapons)?

Also, just because they are fighting "on the street" doesn't mean they haven't been trained in the dojo too...I know of a "gang" member who is a 7th Dan with over 30 years in the martial arts, plus street fighting experience. I somehow think you wouldn't want to attack or be attacked by him!

My opinion on this one....there are too many factors to make a valid determination of who would win.

Have u ever heard" you may know karate but i know crazy".The book art of war"know your enemy". Well you know nothing about what a so called streetfighter knows or what he can do, so it would be harder to fight him.If a person has but one goal and lets say it is to bite your ear off, no matter what the outcome of the fight even if u kill him you will be missing an ear.

Where Art ends, nature begins.
