Not sure, but I presume it may have something to do with a forward swept blade design, similar to a Khukri.

There is a possibility that you overheard a group of people talking about a japanese anime series called Rurouni Kenshin, where the main character, Kenshin, wields a sakabatou, or reverse blade katana. The blade of the sword is on the wrong side, making the front of the sword dull and unable to cut.

Wether an actual reverse blade sword exist, I'm not sure since I have never seen one.

i think they do exist but they seem pretty idiotic to me. i mean...why? the opposite side? makes no sense.

A reverse sword blade is a katana that has the sharp edge on normally what would be the dull side and the dull edge on which would be normally the sharp side. It puts the sharp part dull so the person wouldnt kill the person he is attacking, but in case he needs a sharp edge for an emergency he can always turn it around, alothough then his technique wouldnt be as good.

Rurouni Kenshin is a really good anime. I personally like the oavs better than the episodes though because they take place in the revolution before kenshin vowed not to kill. Oh, and saito is one of the coolest bad guys ever.

Thats where I heard it from. Kenshin is always concerned about how it sucks and if he can beat people with it. I just didn't know what it meant. Why wouldn't a regular sword be a reverse blade? Just attack with the wrong side.

I happened to catch "Rurouni Kenshin" the other night; he and the bad guy were discussing his "reverse blade" sword, schools of swordsmanship, blah blah blah. I checked several historical references and found no such weapon, so I think it's something they just dreamed up for the show. I have only seen a few episodes, so I don't know if they ever provided an explanation for it or not. (I can hear it now: KENSHIN: "Well, it all started with Katsunori, the dyslexic swordmaker...") I am by no means an expert on kenjutsu, but I do know samurai were constantly looking for that edge (sorry) that would make it more likely they'd survive combat, so I suspect that if a "reverse blade" sword had been practical somebody would have founded a school of swordsmanship around it. In short, the idea probably really is as silly as it sounds.

As I say, I've only caught a few episodes of "Rurouni Kenshin," but I didn't find it as offputting as I do most anime. Most anime either irritates, baffles, or bores me. If anybody wants to check out the show, Cartoon Network is airing it at 1830 (EST) weeknights.

I like kenshin, but anyways, its not a real weapon, and they even say in the series he went to a sword maker and had it specialy made for him. Noone else has one. One person even steals the sword, and ends up giving it back because they find its worthless.

The only reason he has the sword is because during the revolution, he was a ruthless killer, and during the end he killed his girl friend, and he realized killing was wrong and all that, so to try to repent for all his killings, he now uses a reverse blade sword and vows never to kill again.

its a good series, but it IS just a cartoon, so dont take some of the stuff too seriously :):):):)

Because she said, "You fool, you spent good money on a backwards sword?"

I haven't seen that one. Why DID he kill his girlfriend? (Shame on him!) Samurai Jack wouldn't do something like that! (I get a kick out of Jack. I admit it. Though the last few I've seen haven't been too good.)
