2 questions.

Ok, first of all thanks for reading. So here come the questions

 

Number 1:

 

What is Ki? I'm not sure what it is and I don't think it's in my style of karate (shotokan) :karate:

 

and number 2:

 

So how do you meditate? Dumbquestion I know but I never really knew how to... :bawling:

Two quick answers for you, my little furry freind.

 

1. Ki is regarded by some as "internal energy" that you can use. Other's think of it as bad breath. Personally i'm not so sure myelf, But I do think that Shotokan has Ki as I is the person and not the style that utilizes Ki (some more than others )

 

As for meditation try pressing ur tumbs against ur index finger and press ur tongue towards the alveolar ridge in ur mouth

K thanks you to but for the meditation one super leeds: my tongue slipped, I made a very weird sound with my mouth and then I just looked like a total prat infront of the computer. Am I ment to close my eyes when doing that and think of something?

Ki - is your life force, inner energy. Yes Shotokan does have it. We don't draw it out as much as say Kung Fu does but we stress the Kia and the development of Ki.

 

Meditation - Don't think of it like Star Wars or Ninja movies. Its just a way to relax. Close your eyes and take deep breaths. Not much more to it than that. Just clear you mind. Some people like to use tention techinqes or move their arms in a series of blocks. To each his own.

Dont press tu hard with your tongue. It helps to close your eyes. I often use this technique during extra hard training sessions (between intervals and such.) It gives me that little extra energy. For longer meditations try Sai's links. His posts/links never dissapoint :)

I was thinking about how we use ki in karate. And I thought first of the correct breathing technique. Proper breathing should originate with the diaphragm not in the upper chest. Think of "belly breathing".

 

Not thinking along those lines the center point tan tien is in the area of the lower abdomen that the movement occurs in during proper breathing.

 

The first drills we do in karate are done with the emission of a kiai - an out-breath. So when we kiai we expel air using the diaphragm. So when we breath in we use the diaphragm to pull the air into the lungs with.

 

Think of the oxygen as an energy. We take in the energy. When we have better breathing techniques we turn more of the air - or potential energy - into the actual energy we use.

 

Think about it. Surreptitiously watch people breath. See if you can see the upper chest area rise and fall or their stomach.
