I started at yellow belt in KSW, which is after about 9 months training. But I was part of the BB Club, which sort of joined by contract, but got to come to special classes on weekends that taught more advanced stuff a little earlier than usual.

In our system we start the bo at 8th Kyu(purple belt). The best type of bo is one that is comfortable to you. I have small hands, so I don't like the big fat/heavy ones. These are some of the bo's that I have used: tapered hardwood, rattan, and waxwood. The waxwood being thin diameter wise, and as flexible as the rattan if not more so. I personally don't like the bo's with all that glitter stuff on it, even if it is for tournaments.

For contact training, I use the fire hardened rattan ones. They tend to last longer. Hope this is helpful.

We are (rather Sensei is) revamping when we start teaching the bo, though I first started using it at Green Belt. The logic behind that was weapons are an extension of your hand so it is good to get some basics down first.

As for what kind, it is a personal choice, and some have more than one. I have one that is oak, tapered at both ends and isn't super light or thin but fits my hands well. Who is going to teach you to use it? Perhaps they have a preference for what kind you should learn with?

my instructor is going to teach me it. she is good with hers. i am allowed to use one whenever i want, well after i buy it. i was learning how to spin one the other day. it was fun. so, out of all the bo's you have used, which type did you like the best?

also, has anyone used a graphite one? they have some in the century magazine that goes into 2 pieces, is that any good? and what is the average price of a good one and what is the max that you would pay for one?

I started using a bo at green belt, which was 7th kyu. The strange part is, I didn't start hitting myself in the head with it until I became 2nd kyu :P

The price of confidence. My bo is a rather odd one. It is octagonal hickory. It is light and flexible and when I am working with it and doing good sharp techniques it feels alive in my hands.

hmm. yea, my instructor told me that people become one with their weapons and sometimes even name them. does any of your weapons have names?

My bo has this pattern in the grain of the wood that looks like a long eye. Like the kind of an eye a dragon my have. I call it my dragon staff.
