King of Fighters
What are the different styles of jui jutsu? If there are too many to name could you tell me how many there are and what the most popular styles? Also which style of juijutsu is the best? which ones have the most striking and which have the most grapling?
Kyle-san
I couldn't tell you how many styles of Jujutsu there are. There are honestly way too many to even name, and usually they don't keep in contact with each other. Even then it's one or two styles in an area, so it's hard to say which is the best and which has the highest striking/grappling mix. Personally, I've found Aki Jujitsu to be very well balanced, and certainly very effective. However, I only know of half a dozen black belts in the style so it's not likely to be very well known. LOILOI44
According to Prof. Kenji Tomiki (founder of Tomiki Aikido) in the later half of the 16th century there were 179 different juijitsu styles in Japan. Now there are probably 100 times that. As far as which style is best, that depends on you. The styles have changed over the years for practical reasons. People no longer wear armor, and things like floral arangement (thought to have taught battle field strategy) don't have a place in modern juijitsu. A good jujitsu school should have a well rounded cirriculum. They should teach strikes, throws, joint techniques, chokes, and ground fighting. You should find schools in your area and watch a class. See if it is good for you. I think it boils down to location. It's what ever style is accessible to you geographically. I'm sorry I wasn't much help, but it's impossible to say which style is best for you.
Golden Panther
Not to mention there is Ju Jitsu (small circle, etc.) and Jiu Jitsu (Brazilian). Even within the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu there are many associations and styles (Machado, Carlson Gracie, etc.).

LOILOI44
I had asked a person from Japan about this same issue. He told me that actually there are several different accepted spellings. Japanese has three different alphabets and things do not always translate dirrectly. This is also why you will see various techniques spelled differently. SaiFightsMS
That is one of the things we try to maintain on this forum. Everyone here should be treated with respect. There are ways to disagree with someone without getting nasty or insulting about it. Those who insult other forum members or make insulting remarks about their art will be asked to clean up their act. If they find that they cannot do that they are asked to leave the forum.
