PhilM1 Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 im gonna be doing bjj soon and everywhere i am hearing bjj is the most effective martial art in the world and such. but from what ive experienced its been just grappling and chokes and stuff. what makes it so effective? fight til you die
Anzie Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 First of all, there is no best martial art. However, some has succeeded more than others in tournaments, for example UFC, IFC, Extreme Fighting and so on. BJJ is effective because most MA does not practice groundwork (as far as I know). How effective is your karate, tae kwon do, boxing, muay thai on the ground? Not saying any of those are ineffective on the ground, just that an experienced grappler (or BJJ'er) will do much better. (I beat a black belt taekwondoka with 7 years of experience in a grappling match, I had no more than two months of grappling behind me.) And when performing an armlock (having his arm in a position so you can break it with ease) or choking him, ever how tough you are, breaking your arm as brutally as many techniques will break them, it's a world of pain you don't wanna enter. Sorry to burst your bubble though, but in streetfighting grappling is not very effective. Why? Because in most streetfights, there is an opportunity for having more than one opponent, and taking the fight to the ground when that happens, is not very smart. My two cents. Grappling enthusiast!Shootfighting as well.
Venezolano Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 PhilM1, In addition to what Anzie said, it effectiveness is also because most fights go to the ground, and it's exactly there where BJJ focuses. Anzie, fighting in the street isn't very smart at all.. Valencia - Venezuela.
Anzie Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 Anzie, fighting in the street isn't very smart at all..Well said. Although, I would prefer fighting on the street rather than getting a beating on the street. But that's just me though. Grappling enthusiast!Shootfighting as well.
Venezolano Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 vry sarcastic your comment... Valencia - Venezuela.
TJS Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Sorry to burst your bubble though, but in streetfighting grappling is not very effective. Why? Multiple attackers would never try to take you there? BJJ is not good for multiple attackers but it can pretty much give you the highest chances of succes against a single opponet..despite the size.
Radok Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Yeah. Or maybe not. It might be good for UFC, but with throught punches legal, u can just kill them rather than roll all over the place. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
TJS Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Yeah. Or maybe not. It might be good for UFC, but with throught punches legal, u can just kill them rather than roll all over the place. have you ever punched someone in the throat? Have you ever tried on a resisting opponet..im guessing no...easier said than done. and while were ont he subject Throat punches were perfectly legal in the first UFC's...for some reason a 170 pound brazilian still won every fight despite these deadly techniques.
Kyle-san Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 I'd have to agree that BJJ will give you excellent chances one-on-one.
JIUJITSUFIGHTER Posted April 20, 2003 Posted April 20, 2003 bjj is an amazing art even with full contact rules or no rules at all i have used it against other highly trained martial artists and they did not even stand a chance. jiu-jitsu is invicinble
