aznkarateboi Posted April 17, 2003 Posted April 17, 2003 how does jeet kune do compare to other martial arts?
Radok Posted April 17, 2003 Posted April 17, 2003 It's not a style. That's what Bruce Lee tried to emphisize. It is a mindset, an outlook on martial arts, that gives you the tool you need to come up with your own personal way of fighting. I think it would be a good thing to take, if you can find a good instructor. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
Wing Chun Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 if your trying to say jeet kune do as in what it means then simplified it means 'cross-training'. example two people who do say - karate. both proficient however one knows certain concepts from kickboxing that work for him perhaps the punches are better for him. i would say he has understood jeet kune do. he will have a better advantage. my perception of jeet une do is basically filling in the gaps in your core martial arts and getting rid of what you dont need.
wcnavstar Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Sorry to but in, who ever told you that Jeet Kune Do meant "cross training"? Maybe I am misunderstanding what you were trying to say. "We work with being, but non-being is what we use" Tao Te Ching
G95champ Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Lee should have already told you the anser in your study of JKD. To have style by not having style. Lee was looking for true MA not tied to style and by his later life he had even went away from JKD because it was a style. Despite being a style with no style. LOL. Each of us have our own MA. The style we choose to bring it out shapes us to some degree but in the end we should all be able to move into the true MA that Lee was talking about. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Treebranch Posted April 23, 2003 Posted April 23, 2003 If Bruce would have lived longer, all these question could be answered, it would have been great to see an old Sifu Bruce Lee taking interviews and answering question. martialartist1 Posted May 2, 2003 Posted May 2, 2003 well simply jeet kune do is the greatest fighting martial art that was ever created by the late great bruce lee. Even though if you dont train and speciliase in it the chances are that during your training of sparring and fighting you'd would of come across a JKD technique within less than a month. no matter what martial art you study there will always be JKD theories and ideas maintained. also JKD imspires anyone and any martial artist as quickly as that.
Treebranch Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 I don't think Jeet Kune Do is the greatest Martial Arts ever created. I think if he lived longer to really develop it, then maybe that claim could be made. I think MA's created during real warring periods(pre-firearm) are the most effective, they had to use their skills to survive. There is no better teacher than the battle field. I saw some films where Bruce was fighting, and he was really fast, but I think someone bigger and stronger with grappling skills could of destroyed him. Sepultura Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 i agree with TreeBranch, bruce was a great martial artist, but his MA isnt ''perfect'',it has its weaknesses like all martial arts.If bruce was still here, maybe he would have developed it more.
Wing Chun Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 you lot are misunderstanding. Bruce's style was the best. not JKD, but his individual style that had no gaps that could be used in all situations. his personal JKD may not have been the best it would have been greta if he had lived to develop it but he wouldnt have. i belive in an ideal Bruce Lee style people would come to learn this 'ultimate' martial art. the instructors would asses every student individualy and each would learn in a way a different martial art, one student would devote 3 times as much time to kicks as another. they would develop each students own personal martial art and allow him/her to blossom.
