Radok Posted April 15, 2003 Posted April 15, 2003 I am currently in Karate, and will probably take one or a few more traditional art(s) to compliment it, and I might make a hybrid out of them. So the question is, what do you think are the top ten traditional MA's, and out of those which 3 or 4 would go best together? If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
Treebranch Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 Go with one Ninjutsu it covers everything, it's the most complete system of fighting, especially true if you want to study weapons. Finding a reputable school is the hard part. If your going into it MA to compete I'd recommend Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Budo Taijutsu, and Muy Thai Kickboxing. Radok Posted April 18, 2003 Author Posted April 18, 2003 It's really more of a pesonal way of fighting using all traditional styles than what a typical MMA is.(muay thai, BJJ, ect.) No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
TJS Posted April 18, 2003 Posted April 18, 2003 It's really more of a pesonal way of fighting using all traditional styles than what a typical MMA is.(muay thai, BJJ, ect.) mma means mixing martial arts..you said okinowan karate was superior to mma...so okinowan karate is only superior to mma if you are mixing effective modern stlyles?
Radok Posted April 20, 2003 Author Posted April 20, 2003 The thing with MMA is they take out the Katas and all the traditional crap so they lose most of the art. They weaken there own style, I don't plan on taking anything out of the arts. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.

Doing Katas will never make you a great fighter and thats a fact. MMA fighters are the best in the world...because they take what works and get rid of the rest. you can take the entire art as a whole but you will never be at the same level as someone who takes the useful techniques and trains them down to instict.
Wing Chun Posted April 20, 2003 Posted April 20, 2003 hang on a minute radok are you trying to say katas are actually useful to become a good fighter? ok whatever. first of all mma isnt about just saying i know karate and kickboxing thats what it is but to the fighter its about taking the best things out of those arts. i dont thing cross training in about 4 arts is very useful because it becomes a bit too much. but the idea that karate is betetr than a good mma fighter is absurd, that fighter might know karet anyway along with muay thai kicks or bjj grappling.i seriously dont think katas dont have much practical value. i would say that a good fusion would be perhaps two good string arst plus knowledge of a grappling style. perhaps wing chun and muay thai to form a striking fusion along with bjj. what do people reckon of this? tjs i would esspecially like to hear your comments on this?
monkeygirl Posted April 20, 2003 Posted April 20, 2003 OK, let's get back to the original question:what do you think are the top ten traditional MA's, and out of those which 3 or 4 would go best together? 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
