For some reason, I almost all the time get caught in a scarf-hold while training (at the dojo or with some friends).

The only thing I can think of is pressing my arm against his Adams Apple, which is a bit helpful, but not very. What would you lot do if caught in one?

bridge and roll - you want to put his face onto the mat. it may take repeated tries. If you see he's not going anywhere, on your next attempt, slip your knee under his backside, then roll the opposite direction. There are other escapes too, but it will depend on the position your arms are in.

you can push his face and catch his face with your legs, or you can join your hip with his hip, do a little birdge so he get like "mounted" on your hip, and then birdge to opposite side.

Ok, perhaps I'm just not with it, but what in the blue heck is a scarf hold?
