Sparring - What do you wear?

Mr. Hall

Do you prefer to spar with the cloth shin and instep or the foam boot?

Old TKD school: foam feet, hands, head, mouthguard, chest protector, cup for guys

New TKD school: cloth shin/instep, forearm guards, head, mouthguard, chest protector, cups for guys and girls

Black belts often spar without chest protectors when conducting classes or during tests.

I wear a helmet (gotta get used to them so they don't bug me in tournaments), mouthguard, gloves, and shin/instep guards - they aren't really cloth, or foam, though. Well, the inside is cloth I guess.

The only required sparring equipment we use in my dojo is a groin cup/supporter.

Only things I allways (almost :D ) use are:

*cup

*mouthguard

For heavy contact, I usually wear:

*boxing headgear or...

*a cage type headgear (for weapons)

*light, open finger gloves, or...

*hockey gloves (weapons again)

I have shin guards and arm guards and heavy gloves. But I've loaned them out more than I've worn them myself.

Boots and instep protection I'd never consider. I either kick with the ball of my foot, side of my foot, heel, or my shin. Only time I use the instep is for something like a scoop, which requires no protection.

We where shin pad etc groin preotectors etc

A karate punch it is like a dasvasted stick blow. Instead, a blow of Kung Was is comparable to a lash with a chain that has attacked, allaltra extremity one ball of ferro

I never said what I had to wear ... sorry. We wear the cloth things for arm and shin. We have chest protectors that I hate (too constrictive) and helmet (too sweaty). I like TKD, but the gear has to go LOL.

In TSD, we wore hardly any gear. I liked that best ;)

Personally I think that wearing the chest protector can make you lazy and sloppy-you know it won't hurt too bad if you get hit so you get hit. I like to spar without one while teaching because I hate to get hit and students can be unforgiving if you let your guard down or revert to old bad habits. This is not to say that they don't have their place in the dojang or ring-safety is a priority these days.

Be surprising...spar nude! ;)

But back to reality.....

My sojourn into TKD intorduced me to the chest and head protector thing, and I hate them with a passion. Too restrictive! In addition, the chest protector does indeed become a crutch for many students. Students tend not to block or avoid techniques, and the "no hands to the head" rule lead to many of them sparring with their hands exceptionally low.
