Tibby Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 Sounds more like a personal problem to me. If you can't see a haymaker coming at you in time to block or dodge, then maybe Martial Arts arn't your cup of tea. There is more then one way to get out of a lapel grab, if that move doesn't work for you, there are at least a dozen more. How would BJJ handle this situation, want would they do that JJ guys wouldn't?
shazaam Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 I would just suggest that my JJJ instructor train the scenario a tad differently than just working the lapel grab. One step sparring in JJJ is a joke. Rest assured that the BJJ man or WOMAN is training the lapel grab by practicing full contact sparring and not trying to brainwash themselves into thinking that a co-operative uke represents reality. Tibby, I am going to report you to Patrick. You are being difficulit and insulting my person. I will not stand for this at https://www.karateforums.com. Peace, Love, Harmony

Tibby, I am going to report you to Patrick. You are being difficulit and insulting my person. I will not stand for this at https://www.karateforums.com. First off there is no one step sparring in JJJ, second of all the lapel grab is used as a focal point to teach a basic principal about joint manipulation, the jujutsuka is learning techniques at a basic level and then through randori and hardship training he hones his skills. Jujutsu teaches principals, not wooden scenrio techniques. Although some schools do not randori most do. I don't even know why I am wasting my time with this because it's just going to go on and on with you BJJ people. I think this topic has ran it's course as we are going right back to where it started off. Lock please! Tapped out, knocked out, or choked out...Take your pick.http://jujitsu4u.com/http://www.combatwrestling.com/http://gokor.com/

Treebranch Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 shazaam said: Simple lapel grab. OK, just grap the hand, thumb into the meaty part between forefinger and thumb, twist the hand towards the ground, pinky up and attacker goes down to one knee...OKay. How about...attacker grabs my lapel and while I go for his hand...HAYMAKER to the bridge of my nose!!! If you are moving off and back on a 45 angle you'll be taking his balance that's when the lock works. Just trying to put a lock on someone while they still have their balance is silling, it won't work. Also if you are taking his balance and your moving back on the 45 angle his haymaker will miss you if you are doing it right. There's a little more to it, but I think you can see my point. "It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.""Lock em out or Knock em out"
shazaam Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 Yes, excellent points all, I think we are in agreement that the wrist torgue is not a standalone technique. So the core of JJJ and BJJ and Judo are identical, with the right attitude and "Alive" training. See, we can get along just fine!! Peace, Love, Harmony
