Tobias_Reece Posted September 3, 2001 Posted September 3, 2001 Point fighting is ok, as long as it is just done as a sport. It is useful to build up speed and co-ordination, but in most cases it aint like a real fight (just ask TBKen). It can be fun, but some ppl take it too seriously. Its about healthy competition guys! WadoGuy Posted September 3, 2001 Posted September 3, 2001 I agree with Tobias_Reece. I haven't competed in a tournament yet, but I've attended several. Tournaments are a good thing as long as people realize that a tournament isn't a real life situation. Didn't Mr. Miyagi have something to say about this is one of the Karate Kid flicks??
Prodigy-Child Posted September 3, 2001 Author Posted September 3, 2001 i c........well its good to know that some people dont take it as seriously as some of those other american karate practicioners. You can boo me if you want, You know I'm right!-Chris Rock
Karateka_latino Posted September 4, 2001 Posted September 4, 2001 It's OKay as a sport, for fun, and its safe enough for everybody can do it.. We don't have full contact/kickboxing matches here. So if you want to compete on fighting, its point fighting what you need to do. That's the way it is here. Fullcontact/kickboxing/muay thai matches require a lot more preparation and endurance a good coach, and most of the people can prepared themself well to compete. So that's why you can choose to do point fighting. Thanks

Tobias_Reece Posted November 27, 2001 Posted November 27, 2001 Bon I do not know of any point sparring where you get points for missing the target by up to half a metre. I, however, have only fought 1 or 1/2 point karate kumite. Please could you enlighten me on this form of point sparring. SBN Doug Posted November 27, 2001 Posted November 27, 2001 I'm guessing the point sparring you mean is like the old Karate Kid movie? Every time a point is scored, fighting stops and you both return to starting possitions. I don't like that at all. I preffer to have three judges rotating through the ring, so they see every angle, and combatants keep going for a specified amount of time (scoring points along the way). My absolute preferance is when take-downs are allowed. Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing.
SaiFightsMS Posted November 27, 2001 Posted November 27, 2001 I do believe point sparring is something we occidentals have done to ancient and nobel arts. It is however, one of the few ways for students to test their skills. And It has proven to be a crowd pleasing form of entertainment. Where would the arts be today if it werent for the point fighting matches in the 60's that exposed many to the arts for the first time.
