SaiFightsMS Posted April 5, 2003 Posted April 5, 2003 It was not until Funakoshi's generation that karate styles were given names. Itosu taught tode. There are several styles that were given names we recognise that were Itosu's students. But in general the naming of styles is a function of the 20th century.

I already know everything people think is bad about shotokan thats not why i started this thread! ........................................... Maybe there are few redeeming values. There are many limits built into Shotokan. Maybe it was done intentionally, who really knows but the limits are there and you must deal with them. Shotokan does have some strengths, like strength. unfortuantly this leads to it's weaknesses. For instance many of the moves rely on power rather than skill.
G95champ Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 Shotokan is the mix of Gojo and Shorin Ruy. Thus it has 2 great ties from the start. Funakoshi also had a background in Judo so another quality tie. Shotokan was also the first art brought to the USA after WWII by Funakoshi and his studensts much less the first one to really become orginized under the JKA. Shotokan is very well rounded and its simple focus makes it eaisy for almost everyone to do. With tons of Books and Web Sites on it anyone can double check and get extra info on it as needed. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
